Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is Should Setien stay in Barcelona? This is one of the trending topics right now and I feel like we should discuss it too. Setien has had some fans and some haters ever since he took over. However, the majority of the fans were infuriated when Barcelona recently lost to Osasuna. This was Barcelona’s and Setien’s first defeat after football restarted. Furthermore, Madrid won the La Liga title on the same day. Therefore, their victory added fuel to the fire burning inside the Barca fan base. The fans protested against Setien angrily.
However, this is a delicate topic and I feel like we need to think more from our brains than just emotions. Do we need to sack Quique Setien? For now, it has been decided that Setien is going to stay in Barcelona and he is going to be in charge of the CL games. So what is the point of this discussion anyway? Many of you must be thinking that if he is already staying then why are we discussing this? My main aim in writing this article is to clear your views about Quique Setien.
I am not a Quique Setien fan, but I am just considering the real picture. I am thinking realistically that why he still deserves to be around. Setien still has to prove himself, but there are also some places where he has made things better for us.
We cannot label him as a 100% flop and kick him out of the club. That would be unfair as hell. Therefore, we are going to state facts in this article about the good and the wrong things Setien has done up till now. We are also going to briefly discuss Barcelona’s future possible managers.
SHOULD SETIEN STAY AT BARCELONA?
Barcelona lost to Osasuna which absolutely ended their 5 or 10% chance to somehow win the La Liga. Let’s face it. We already knew that we were not going to win the league even if we scored 10 goals against Osasuna. However, the defeat itself was not acceptable and Barcelona should have done better against a smaller team. Therefore, the critics against the mistakes we did in that game still makes some point. On the other side, it is unfair to take that defeat and associate it with the reason that we failed to win Liga.
Furthermore, Setien’s Barcelona showed some positive signs as they ended the campaign with a 5 goal win against Alaves. Setien was able to end the season on a good note and a big victory always boosts the confidence of the players. Furthermore, he said in his interview that he sat down with the players and he spoke to them about the changes needed at the club. Now this tells you that Setien is by no means taking his job for granted. He might not be doing incredibly good at it, but he still cares. He wants the best for us.
NEW FORMATION, INTRODUCTION OF BARCA B PLAYERS AND ORGANISED DEFENSE:
Let’s just talk about the three best things Setien has done ever since he took the managerial role at Barcelona. I would like to make it clear that these three are not the only good things he has done. These three are what the best seems to be out of all of them. Setien introduced a more (sort of) tiki-taka style after he took charge. Now, I am not saying that he implemented that playing style successfully. However, we started playing better football than we used to under Ernesto Valverde.
This was not one of the three best things I was talking about. I am going to talk about the first one now. We noticed that Setien was experimenting with a new kind of starting lineup and formation in the previous few games. This is something we were not used to seeing under Valverde. This new formation proposed an attacking mentality. The full-backs were playing really wide, more like wing backs. Furthermore, the front three players were playing in a narrow space making it possible for the full backs to join the attack more often. This was an attacking approach.
However, we still had trouble in the final third part of the pitch. Barcelona was still struggling to get goals despite going all out for them. This increased the frustration between the players and it might be one of the reasons that Messi absolutely went crazy after the defeat against Osasuna. However, we have also seen our players creating chances, but failing to apply the final touch in order to score. The manager cannot be fully blamed over here. It is obvious that the players have to go and score the goals. So what can the manager do about it?
Puig, Fati, and Araujo:
Setien used Ansu Fati more often in order to bring out the best in him. Fati is already an amazingly talented and confident player. However, he gained more confidence when he became a part of the lineup every week. He did the same to Puig as well. We know Puig stunned everyone with his first appearance in Barca colors. Ever since the fans demanded to see more from him and Setien did not disappoint. He regularly added him into the starting lineups and now Puig is gradually becoming one of the main midfield players.
This shows that Setien had his eyes on the younger players as well. Furthermore, he gave playing time to Araujo as well. With Gerrard Pique and Lenglet around, there was no place for Araujo. However, Setien somehow managed to give him some game time which surely added more confidence in him as well. Now let’s talk more about Clement Lenglet and Gerrard Pique. We know that both of them were not performing well when football was paused due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, Setien almost finished that after football resumed. We saw major improvements from both of the Center-Backs.
Gerrard and Lenglet had coordination issues as well, and they look resolved as well. There are still weaknesses in both of them, but of the reasons for that is also that they are old and they cannot play as actively as before. Setien cemented the place of Nelson Semedo at the Right Back position and we have also seen Jordi Alba performing quiet well after the return of football. Semedo went on to having a few minutes at the end of every game to being the undoubted starter at Right Back. It was his hard work, as-well but Setien’s brains too.
SHOULD PIMIENTA TAKE OVER?
Xavier Pimienta has been a part of the Barcelona system for as long as one could think. He had been coaching the lower Barcelona teams and also the Barca B team. He is surely deserving of getting the managerial role at the Barcelona team. However, now is not the time? Maybe, the time did come for him, but Barca did not consider it. Pimienta should have been appointed when Valverde was sacked. However, Barcelona chose to go over with Setien. Now they must stick to it. I think Setien needs time and he can bring something positive.
Setien deserves to move ahead to the Champions League fixture with the team. He faced many struggles when he took over the position in Barcelona. He is facing with lack of rotations, injury problems, and frustration from the players. Therefore, it is not easy to be in his shoes as well. Barcelona only had two-point advantages over Real Madrid when Setien took over. This was a small and rather delicate figure. How long does it take for a team to drop two points and the other team to pick two points? Setien has still not made his changes freely.
Setien needs to operate with the team through pre-season to make sure that he has what he needs. He still has to coordinate more with the players and tell them what he wants. Furthermore, he still has to make his desired signings as well. When he came into the club, Alena and Todibo were already leaving and there was nothing Setien could do about it. Therefore, we need to give this guy a break and start putting some faith in him as long as he is around. Pimienta deserves this job as well. However, his time is yet to come.
Anyway, guys, this is it from our side. I felt like this topic was trending and the fans wanted to talk about it. I am no Quique Setien fan, but I have carefully considered the facts. Therefore, my opinion is that Setien should stay at Barcelona for the next season and we can see what he does to the team. However, if he crumbles in the European games, I think it would make way for Pimienta to step in.
I personally think Setien needs to stay a bit longer. Stay tuned for more up coming content.
