Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is Sevilla vs Barcelona Match Review. What a disappointment. This is not the kind of football I was expecting to see. Yes, there were a few positives to take from this game. However, there were more than a few negatives as well. It was a really important fixture for us. It was a must-win game. Barcelona desperately needed the 3 points from this game. However, it did not happen. Barcelona drew against Sevilla, and both teams shared 1 point. This draw has leveled our number of points with Real Madrid FC.
The worst thing is that Madrid is still to face their opponents for this week. Let us consider Madrid’s form and confidence again. Do you get why I was emphasizing so much on this aspect lately? Do you think Madrid is going to lose? Do you think they are going to draw the game just like us? I mean I wish they do, but the chances for it to happen are less likely. Don’t get me wrong. I do not intend to put any hate on my team. I said this In the Preview, and I am going to repeat.
Good and bad performances cannot be predicted. These players are playing under so much pressure that delivering consistent master class performances is a tough task. What is the worst thing which is going to happen? Real is going to win the league, and we end up second? So what? I am okay with it. I just want my players to get back the right confidence, and the right mentality as soon as possible. The season is going end, but not football. After a few months, another season is going to start. We just need to eliminate our mistakes.
SEVILLA VS BARCELONA MATCH REVIEW
Now let’s talk about the game. Yes, we were not the greatest. Therefore, I am going to point out mistakes. I may criticize a little, but I mean no hate. I am here to discuss the positives and the negatives with my audience, and this is exactly what I am about to do. We certainly did not get the job done. This was a big challenge for Quique Setien as well, and I am not pleased. We are upset. We are angry, and we wanted more from our team. It did not happen.
If you look closely, this was a game of two halves. In the first half, Barcelona was really good. In the second half, Sevilla FC looked more dominant. Barcelona had one of the best starts in this game. I have never seen them starting any game better than this lately. I wouldn’t deny the fact that the first half performance looked to me as if we are going home with the win. However, the situation completely flipped over in the second half. Yes, we had a few mistakes in the lineup. I am going to discuss them further in this article.
Player choices affected both teams. Sevilla brought in Banega in the second half, and I guess that was the turning point for them. Banega was so much involved in the game. He made sure that Sevilla plays flowing and smooth football. His arrival initiated a completely different kind of gameplay from Sevilla. Their passes were sticking, all of a sudden. They were able to move better with the ball. Furthermore, they also increased their possession rate. This all brought Barcelona on to its back foot. I think those were the moments that should not have happened.
SEVILLA VS BARCELONA STARTING LINEUP
Marc Andre Ter Stegen started in goal. I talked about this in my Match Preview that this is going to be a busy day for the German International. The same happened. Sevilla kept testing Stegen’s abilities from time to time. They were even more dominant in the second half, and there were times when it looked as if Sevilla has scored for sure. However, Ter Stegen stayed firm and kept on denying attempts from the opposition. He made several crucial saves. I think he deserves a heavy credit that we were able to end 0-0.
All 4 of our defenders had a really busy day as well. Jordi Alba started on the Left Back. Gerrard Pique and Lenglet were the starting Center Backs, and Semedo was the Right Back. I’ll talk about Semedo later. I want to save his discussion for the last. Gerrard Pique was involved in the game. He looked solid, especially in the first half. He made a couple of really crucial clearances. He had many heading clearances as well which shows Sevilla did test our aerial abilities. Pique is showing positive signs in recent fixtures. He is working hard.
However, we cannot depend upon Pique to do all the defensive work for us. I need more work from Lenglet. Lenglet was impressive in the previous fixture. He made crucial tackles and made a goal-line clearance. However, I demand consistent performance from every player. Now let’s talk about Semedo. I wanted to spare all my time to talk about him because this was how good he played. I think Semedo was our best player. He is a gem. I mean what a performance. I have so much to talk about, yet I am out of words.
Semedo completely bossed the right-hand side. He troubled the Sevilla attackers more times than I can count. He was also confident to play higher up on the pitch. I think it is time we start considering Semedo over Roberto even when Roberto is fit. Semedo is an extremely pacy, and agile player. When you combine that with great passing sense, and superb ball control, you get a world-class right back. No wonder Barcelona wants to sell this guy. I mean, what do we have to do with good players, isn’t it? Semedo is a gem, hands down!
I have a lot to talk about in the midfield as well. The starting trio in the midfield was Sergio Busquests, Rakitic, and Vidal. I know all of us were expecting Arthur to start. I even talked about this in my Match Preview. Rakitic’s addition in the squad meant that we were possibly playing with a defensive mentality, and it was a little risky as well. However, did Rakitic not impress? If Semedo was the best player in defense, Rakitic was the best in midfield. I think Ivan Rakitic had one of the best games of his season.
He is progressing at such a faster rate. Ivan is showing improvements regularly, and no doubt he is starting above Arthur. Arthur is not impressive at the moment. If Arthur keeps playing like this, it is going to be hard for him to start above Rakitic or De jong in the upcoming fixtures. Rakitic was good today. He was making a lot of forwarding passes. He looked more creative, more dominant, and eager to attack. Rakitic involved himself as much as he could both defensively, and offensively. He deserves appreciation for this performance.
Sergio Busquests was good too. I remember that he made so many interceptions in this game, especially in the first half. This shows that he was really alert, and his game reading was on point. Sergio is one of the most consistent lads around. His gameplay is so simple. He is never interested to make flashy dribbles or do nutmegs or flick the ball over someone’s head. Sergio is always concerned about making spaces, finding spaces, and play killer passes. This is the best thing about him. This is the right Barcelona kind of mentality. What a great player!
Wingers and Striker:
Lionel Messi started on the Left-wing. Braithwaite started on the Right-wing and Suarez started as the number 9. Lionel Messi played centrally the majority of the time. Braithwaite was not good at all. Braithwaite had more contribution off the ball. He was certainly not effective with the ball at his feet. Furthermore, Quique made some really strange substitutions. He subbed Braithwaite with not Ansu Fati or Griezmann, but Arthur. So there were technically 4 midfielders and 2 attackers. Then he subbed off Vidal and brought in Griezmann. I mean what was the guy thinking about?
Do you think these strange rotation choices were responsible for the draw? Suarez was not impressive as well. Our attack failed as a whole. One moment, we looked dominant, and another moment, we looked weak. I was hoping that Messi completes his 700 career goals in this game, but that did not happen as well. It was not a good day for us overall. We need to work harder. There is still a chance for us in La Liga. This result was not curtains for us. We need luck though. However, fortunes favor the brave.
This is now time to show some guts.
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS
I have three particular players in my mind whom I would like to nominate as the best in this game.
The German goalkeeper is the first best individual performer of the game. He is consistent, and always gets the job done for us. Our team drew the game, but Ter Stegen ended with another clean sheet. That is an achievement on its own. He certainly deserved this as well. He saved us on numerous occasions today. What more can you demand from a goalkeeper? He plays like an additional defender.
Ter Stegen is surely a blessing to our team. Our players should work even harder on the pitch to credit our consistent performers. Football is a game of 11 men, and not just 2 or 3. How long do we expect Ter or Messi to carry the team? It is now time our remaining players make serious efforts.
Semedo was so good today. I have talked a lot about him above, and I feel praising him even more. Semedo was solid. He was there for the team whenever we needed him. Semedo made sure no one from the opposition gets past from the right-hand side. We knew this was a game of wingers, and fullbacks and Semedo surely dominated his side. He was tackled badly. He was fouled on numerous occasions, and even the referee did not book the player about it. It must have been physically, but also mentally painful for him.
However, Semedo did not lose confidence and ended up with a great performance. I want to see him start more often. Trust me, our team needs Nelson Semedo. He is a gem. We should not sell him. I don’t care if Barcelona is considering to bring Laporte or whoever. Semedo needs to stay at FC BARCELONA.
Ivan was extremely good today as well. His gameplay displayed the attacking mentality in his mind. He is showing consistent improvements, and this is all we need from every player. Rakitic is looking keen to not repeat any previous mistakes, and this is what is bringing out the best in him. Rakitic had one of the best performances of the season, and I am thinking that he is making a serious statement out of his performances. He looks eager to stay here and is letting his feet do the talking.
I think Rakitic still has a few years of football left in him, and if he’s good enough, why not spend those at Barca?
