Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is Ronald Koemann as New FC Barcelona Coach. This news is out and official and everyone knows about it till now. Quique Setien was sacked right after the humiliating 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich. Koemann was announced as the new managerial figure at FC Barcelona within a couple of days. The news is official now that Ronald Koemann is going to begin the next season with FC Barcelona. He is also going to get the pre-season time with the team so that he can get set things according to his preferences.
Koemann is an FC Barcelona legend. He has been at this club and he has a pretty clear idea about how things work over here. The sacking of Quique Setien was on the cards. I had different opinions on this topic. I did not want him to get sacked. However, it was really obvious after how Bayern thrashed us out of the CL competition. Koemann has now taken over the things in his hand and he is certainly going to try and bring changes over here at the club.
He is an experienced managerial figure. He has coaching experience in La Liga as well as the Premier League. Furthermore, he has coached teams such as Everton and Southampton. Therefore, he knows how to make a team play good football. However, I am not pretty excited about his appointment honestly. I do not have much hope from Ronald Koemann considering the situation of the current FC Barcelona board. Setien should not be the only one who has left this club. Some people from the higher authorities need to leave as well.
However, let’s just talk more in detail about Koemann and discuss if his signing is worth it for us or not?
RONALD KOEMANN AS NEW FC BARCELONA COACH
It is fair enough to say that Koemann has taken a big step by simply agreeing to come to FC Barcelona during this time. The club is currently full of mess and our board is the worst. The board is currently not ready to resign and the club elections are going to be held around after 6 months. Therefore, this is a big gamble from the former Netherlands coach. I have no idea what he must be thinking before agreeing terms with FC Barcelona. However, it has happened now and the news is official on media.
IS KOEMANN WORTH IT?
I know that the club’s board is a mess and deserves any kind of slang. However, it is also important to discuss if Koemann is the right man for Barcelona or not? Does he have whatever the club is demanding right now? Things are not pretty good at FC Barcelona these days. The players especially Lionel Messi is pretty frustrated. There is a big confusion on which players to keep and who to sell? Furthermore, the wound of the horrific 8-2 defeat is still fresh. Therefore, no one is very generous to any new figure coming to the club.
Coming to FC Barcelona right now is no less than a very big challenge. Koemann is indeed aware of the challenges lined up for him. The board is not the greatest. The squad is full of senior figures who are losing fitness and lastly, there are many changes needed to be done before the next season begins. So can he handle all the pressure and give this FC Barcelona team a new shape? Ronald’s love for FC Barcelona is undoubted. He is a Catalan legend and he has expressed his desire to lead the club on several occasions.
Koemann certainly achieved a lot as a player. He was one of the most versatile players of his time. His unique and robust style of playing saw him playing as a regular center back for the team. However, his technical abilities and tactical thinking also allowed him to operate as a CDM at times which has always been a delicate position at FC Barcelona. He also bagged in a lot of goals for FC Barcelona. His crucial goal in the 1992 European Cup title also led to Barcelona winning the title.
Therefore, it is no doubt that he was a fighter for the team and certainly knew how to play good football. His name is written in the books as an FC Barcelona legend and he deserved that too. However, things are not very good in terms of his managerial career. I mean it is not like that Koemann is an inexperienced or unqualified manager. The thing is that is FC Barcelona is currently going through a major crisis and it is going to take some expertise to drag them out of this. Ronald serviced this Barcelona team with hard work and zeal. How can he operate as a manager?
Koemann is surely an experienced candidate. He worked under Louis Van Gaal as an assistant coach at our very own FC Barcelona. Furthermore, he has also managed Ajax which is another team similar to Barcelona’s playing mentality. He managed Benfica and PSV and also guided them to Quarter Finals in Champions League football. However, his results in both of these clubs were average and not very special. He spent time in Spain managing Valencia. He guided the team to a Copa Del Rey victory. However, the CDR trophy could not help him to stay. He was later sacked.
Koemann has good experience outside as well. He moved to Southampton in the UK where he had a comparatively decent performance as a manager. He managed to make Southampton finish above the top 10 spots for two consecutive years. Furthermore, he also won a few managers of the month awards during his time at the club. He further extended his English football experience by managing Everton. However, his time over there was not pretty good and he was soon sacked by the club. His biggest achievements come in International Football. He coached the Netherlands in 2018 where he completely lifted them.
Koemann managed to take the Netherlands team to the finals of the Euros. Judging Koemann’s future at FC Barcelona based solely on his previous performances as a manager would be slightly unfair. Luis Enrique was not a successful manager before he came to FC Barcelona. Furthermore, Pep Guardiola was a nobody when he took things over at the same club. Therefore, anything can happen at any moment in football. This is the beauty of the game. Therefore, all that needs to be done now is showing the new guy some respect, and let’s see what he does at Barca.
I already said before that football is an unpredictable game and nothing is certain. Who knows Koemann might be the right guy for Barcelona despite the fact that his managerial career is not crowned with a lot of trophies? I think he is brought to the club at the right time. He was all the time in the world to implement his changes in the team, unlike Quique Setien. Let’s see how Ronald Koemann gets along with the players. Furthermore, let’s see how our players come out after pre-season under Koemann. It all comes down to will and determination.
Koemann can do nothing alone at this club. The board must be cooperating and the players must be willing to drag themselves out of this nasty situation. I think Quique Setien was over blamed. That guy did make a few positive impacts on our club and team. However, he was kicked out unfairly. Can Koemann be just another Quique Setien? Or is he going to be the next Luis Enrique of this club who managed to win the treble with this Barca?
