Quique Setien attended the Press Conference as the Manager of FC Barcelona and answered the questions for the media and the fans where he shared his philosophy and ideas. He started the conversation with a positive tone and thanked the club for this magnificent opportunity. He emphasized how much this job meant to him. Here are his exact words:
“It’s a very special day for me. First, I want to thank the institution for the opportunity it has given me. Secondly, to say I am enthusiastic and excited about the project.”

Then, Setien talked about his way of playing. He highlighted that wherever he goes, he promotes beautiful football and his team does not fear anything. He has shown us that he is the man who takes risks and often gets his reward. Here is what he said:
“I can guarantee that my team will play good football. I have shown that with other teams I have been at.”

Setien then talked about the intensity he intends to bring into the club and the players. Here is what he said:
“I arrive with energy and I will try and get that across to the players. Normally it’s not difficult for me. I hope to be a motivation.”
“Every time that a new coach comes in, it is a stimulus for the squad. This, I have seen in the first training session and I want to maintain that for the rest of the season.”

La Masia, Current Squad, and Messi:
When asked about the La Masia and young players in the B-Team, Setien responded:
“Barça has an extraordinary youth system. I will look after the young players: when one comes up, it give the whole side energy. They will get chances to be a real part of the first team.”

Basically, he showed his admiration for our academy and the talents we have produced over the years. Setien intends to rely on our academy as he belives great talents can come from the academy to give a boost to the squad. Moreover, he has assured the young players that they will get a chance to shine, and if they impress the coach, they will get regular game time. When the reporter asked Setien if he is satisfied with his current squad, he replied:
“The talent is there. I am an honest and direct person and I will try to make them work.”
“They have made me enjoy football. Every day and every game.”
“Most of the things I want to teach, they already know.”

This shows that Setien has watched Barca play on a regular basis and understands the players to some extent. He is bringing in the core values of the club and our players are already familiar with it. So, it wouldn’t take long for everyone to get on the same wavelength. A reporter asked Setien about the Messi and he replied:
“He is unique and special”
“I am not yet aware of what it means to coach the best player in the world and his team mates. Yesterday, I was sitting quietly at home and today I found myself at the Ciutat Esportiva.”
“Also, I would rather talk about the whole squad instead of talking about an individual player.”

Setien On Valverde:
This statement shows that we would not be seeing a one-man show as we have seen over the past two and a half years. We would see the whole team working as a unit in their discrete roles. Everyone will be working hard to get their names on the teamsheet and, to be honest, this is what we want from our club. Lastly, Setien commented on Valverde. He said:
“I value the work he has done, he leaves me Barça in first place in the table. As such I want to thank him. A lot of things from his work will be good for us.”
