Welcome back to TalkBarca. This is time for the Match Review. Our topic for today is the Mallorca vs Barcelona Match Review. It feels so nice to be saying this again. I missed our weekly Previews and Reviews. We are back, and we are back with a great performance. Barcelona went away to Mallorca, and completely destroyed the team. I am so happy with a performance. I don’t think that our team could resume the league in a better way than this. Barcelona went away from home, after a break of 3 months, and ended up winning the game 0-4.
We had a great game. There were a few unexpected changes in the lineup which we are going to discuss later on. However, it worked well for us. Barcelona did end up winning the game really comfortably. Now we are at a 5 points lead from our rivals, Real Madrid. We have now shifted the entire pressure to Real Madrid FC now, and they have a comparatively difficult fixture than us. Therefore, I am much relieved about their fixture. They might end up winning the game, but we are still going to remain at the top with 2 points lead.
It was a great day for us, indeed. Lionel Messi ended up with 2 assists, and 1 goal. What a magical return this is from the king. I hope that he keeps consistent with this form. Suarez showed brilliant signs of improvement, but I am going to save this discussion for later. Overall, I am really pleased with the performance every player displayed today. My only concern is if we can keep up with the same form. If we donot, then there are obvious signs of worry. However, if we dd, then teams in Europe should really start getting prepared.
Goalkeeper and Defense
Ter Stegen started in goal. It was exactly according to what we expected. He ended up with a clean sheet, and really deserved that. Ter Stegen stood rock solid in goal, and did save a couple of good chances created by Mallorca. Furthermore, Gerrard Pique and Araujo started as Center Backs. Yes, I was expecting Umtiti to start, but Quique had better plans I guess. Umtiti was actually available for the game. He was on the bench, but Setien decided to start Araujo. It was never a bad decision. I think Araujo played pretty well.
He tried his best to be as much involved in the game as possible. He also nearly scored if luck was on his side. However, I am more concerned about his defensive duties than scoring a goal. I think he made life easier for Pique. He made sure that Pique can sit down, and easily plays as the last man. Overall, I am impressed by the performance of the young lad, and I think he needs to play more for us. Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba started as Right Back, and Left Back respectively. Both of them looked really fresh.
I think it was a joy to watch both of our full backs play. They showed great signs of elevated fitness, and agility level. Furthermore, our full backs were also really involved in the game, linking passes with forwards and midfield players. This is exactly the Barcelona philosophy we talk about on this website. I think that it was an amazing display of football, and we need to keep playing like this. Jordi Alba also got a goal courtesy of a beautiful first time pass from Lionel Messi. However, Jordi Alba also got booked, and is suspended for next game.
Frenkie De Jong, Busquests, and Vidal started in the midfield. This was once again pretty similar to what I expected from Quique Setien. I think that our midfielders are in really fine touch as well. Our midfielders were spot on. Busquests is always so good. He is one of the most consistent players on our squad list. He was subbed off later. Furthermore, it was really amazing to see the same energy and Spartan behavior from Vidal. Vidal played his natural attacking, high pressing game. He was also subbed off later. Frenkie De Jong also had a great game.
He is gradually turning into a key asset for our midfield. I always like to see him play. He is always so good with the ball. He is creative, and always knows his way out of pressure situations. Frenkie is just like Busquests who doesnot get upset due to high press. Even when Frenkie is against a physically stronger player than him, he still manages to unbalance his opponent, and then play a good pass. This is the kind of football we need to keep witnessing from these players. I can bet if we play similarly we are winning Liga.
Rakitic, and Arthur were also used in the midfield later on. Oh boy, I am so impressed with Rakitic. It was like that he completely changed or something. Rakitic was in such fine form yesterday, I donot even know how to explain it. He was playing really good passes. He was dropping down, and also made a few great tackles. All I need to see is if that was a fluke performance or is he really coming back to his previous form? Arthur was also decent. He did not get a lot of playing time, but hopefully, he’ll start soon.
Does Cooling Break help?
Let’s take a break from the lineups, and talk about the cooling break system. Players took 2 cooling breaks during the game I guess. The breaks lasted for a minute or two maybe, but is it helpful? I think yes. I think that this is a great initiative to help players relax, and rehydrate. We also saw that these breaks helped our team to focus better. Therefore, players are definitely going to look to benefit from these breaks as well. We also got our second goal right after the first cooling break. This explains my point.
Wingers and Striker
Griezmann started as the number 9 striker, Lionel Messi started off as the Right winger, and Braithwaitte started on the Left wing. I am really impressed with Braithwaitte. He showed his worth in this game. Braith showed exactly why Barcelona needs to prioritize him. He got his first Barcelona goal as well which is a great individual achievement for him. This goal is also going to give him a huge confidence boost, which is going to benefit Barca in the later games. Braithwaitte almost got his second goal as well, but that was a great effort from the Mallorca keeper.
Furthermore, Braithwaitte also dropped down, and showed his defensive importance to the team as well. He participated in snatching the balls, and distributing them into his midfield. He did link up a few good plays with Messi, and his other midfield team mates. Overall, it was a great outing for the new Barcelona signing. He definitely looks promising, and hopefully he is going to continue like this. Griezmann had a decent game too, but he did not impress me a lot. I don’t know why Griezmann is going through a mediocre performance phase. I hope it’s over soon.
Griezmann was replaced with Suarez, and wasn’t Suarez so good? Suarez did not manage to get a goal despite he had 1-2 chances, but I am still really positive about him. His fitness is so much better, and he also showed great signs of elevated pace. I saw him out pacing defenders, and yes Suarez have not done that since a long time. I am really positive about Suarez making a big impact for us in the later games. Last to discuss is Messi, but what do I say about a little magician? 2 assists, 1 goal and 10/10 rating.
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS
I think every player on our squad list deserves to be nominated in this best individual performance category. However, there are a few who really stood out.
I think Ter Stegen had a great individual performance because he ended up with a clean sheet. I think he really needed that, and that is a big achievement for our club considering our weak defensive condition. Stegen showed brilliant reflexes, improved focus, and same leader behavior. It is a blessing to have him in our squad. Overall, a great day for the German goalkeeper. Well played!
Jordi Alba also had a great outing. I think the booking he received was deliberate, and Jordi could have avoided that tackle over there. However, he is the one who has to play week in and week out for the team so he knows better. I mentioned above that he is now suspended for the next game, and Junior Firpo is going to replace him. He is going to be back against Sevilla so that is another relief. Lastly, Jordi also scored a goal which he doesnot normally do. Usually, he really loses composure in front of goal.
However, this time he ran with the ball easily, and finished the ball near post with great composure. I would also like to credit Messi for playing that great first time pass. However, this is the good thing about both of them. Both, Jordi and Messi have a great chemistry on the pitch, and this play was just another example of that. This is why we need Jordi Alba just as much as we need Messi in big games. Hopefully, Jordi is back at his full fitness now, and can play all our remaining games in a similar way.
Messi is the man of the match, and for the right reasons. Messi dropped a 10/10 sofascore rating with 2 assists, and 1 goal. He carried the team, and did involve himself like he usually does. What else can you ask him for? He came back after 3 months, and showed this performance. This is his class. This is the Messi effect. Messi is exactly why such a big threat. This is the reason why almost every tema in Europe is afraid of facing him. I can go on for hours praising him. I am really very happy today.
Messi got his goal in the stoppage time, and before that he was seen participating more in team plays, and playing killer passes. I mentioned above Braithwaitte missed second goal. Braith missed that simply because of the keeper’s brilliance. Otherwise, it was just another great pass from Messi to set up Braith in a 1v1 situation. Then, there was that assist to Jordi Alba. Messi provided Alba with a first time chipped ball over the defenders. That really takes some brilliance to pull over. I am so positive about Messi now. I was uncertain before the game about his performance.
However, now I say that teams really need to get their homework done. I don’t think that homework is going to work against him, but atleast be prepared. Jokes apart, this was yet another Master Class from the king, and I am sure that these master classes are going to keep coming. I want Messi to perform the same for us in the CL as well. I am worried about that tournament as well, but we are going to talk about that later. It is now time to enjoy what we have seen, and that is a classic from Messi.
