Welcome to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is the Match Review of Leganes vs Barcelona. Barcelona traveled to Madrid to face Leganes at their home. Barcelona won the match 1-2 scoreline, and this victory is for sure, undeserving. Yes, I mean it! We went away from home, and delivered another poor performance outside the Camp Nou premises. So without any delay, lets start with the Match Review.
LEGANES VS BARCELONA MATCH REVIEW
Barcelona won the game, but, never got going. Leganes, a team at the bottom of the table outclassed us. We are lucky to win this game. Honestly, this is not our first lucky win this season. I am surprised how many times we can go through after performing so poorly.
Leganes scored the first goal courtesy of a brilliant shot by Youssef En-Nesyri. This was a really deserving lead as Barca’s defense was sloppy and it seemed as if the defenders were playing unwillingly.
Barcelona registered its first shot on target after 31 minutes. The attacking 4 namely, Lionel Messi, Griezmann, Dembele and Suarez were a complete flop. Messi was operating from too deep in the midfield. Meanwhile, Griezmann seemed flat footed and trouble the opposition with his movement. He lacked the energy, the will, and the desire to make an impact. He was subbed off at the 57th minute. I am a huge Antoine fan, but, I think that his substitution is justified considering how poor he was. He completely failed to make any sort of impact on the game.
Dembele also failed to get going. Ousmane Dembele is known for being pacy and creative. However, in this fixture he failed to live up to his usual reputation. Dembele must take advantage of every opportunity given to him. As a matter of fact, Dembele has to prove his worth in these kind of matches if he wants to cement a place in the starting XI. Lets take a look at the Starting Lineup.
Valverde came up with a really confusing and out of ordinary formation for this away game. It was a 4-2-3-1 formation with 4 defenders, 2 holding midfielders, 3 attacking midfielders and 1 striker. We are going to discuss this formation later. Lets us take a look at every position individually.
Junior Firpo started on the Left Back position. He played this game solely because of Jordi Alba’s injury. Other than that, Valverde is never going to choose him above Alba. If he wants to make a permanent impact and make his name in the starting lineup permanently, he needs to be serious. Junior Firpo must take advantage of all the opportunities given to him and must work hard.
Wague played as Right Back. He had a great game considering he is one of the most unexperienced players in this squad with least game time. In fact, it was his very first game for Barcelona this season.
Umtiti and Pique started as Center Backs. Both failed to influence the game especially Pique. I think Pique’s head is not at the right place. His primary focus is on his business rather than his game. Therefore, we have to find a perfect replacement for Pique sooner than later.
De Jong and Busquests played as holding midfielders. De Jong didn’t shine a lot as well. Busquests was just okay. However, the important thing to note is that De Jong seemed to struggle with this particular formation.
Griezmann, Messi, and Dembele played as attacking midfielders. Suarez was the sole striker. Our front 4 failed miserably. I admit that our players are world class, however, in today’s game they seemed to be slower than Amateur players. We expect so much from them, but, they have disappointed us once again.
If we cannot score well or attack well against Leganes, imagine what is going to happen against Dortmund? What are we going to do against tough oppositions? We’ll get humiliated, yeah right! No big deal, its not our first time anyway. We need to pick ourselves up before its too late. Otherwise, the result is going to be the same. This is what haunts me. I don’t want to see another UCL performance bottled.
Valverde opted one of the most confusing formations in Leganes vs Barcelona fixture. However, this can be fruitful for us in the future. Its true that we need to stick with the basics, play our natural game, and do what we do best. If you look closely, this formation can benefit us both in defense and attack.
Our players just need to adapt to this and if they do, I think this formation can work well for us. Now I might be wrong, but, here’s what I make up of this.
We play 2 holding midfielders alongside 4 defenders. This adds further strength to our defense. We know how poor our defense is and with extra support, we can potentially strengthen it.
Our holding midfielders are actually the most important figures in this formation. They have to play without stopping if this tactic is to succeed for us. Our CDMs need to help defense, and need to connect with the attack as well. If this can happen, things can get really positive for us.
Our attackers can spread out and stretch the width of play. Messi can continue playing centrally and influence the game like he normally does. This way Suarez can also be a part of the starting XI without excluding Griezmann. When Messi and Suarez both penetrate centrally, man marking is going to be really tough for the defenders. However, this all is easier said than done. We have to wait and see if we’ll see more of this formation or not.
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES:
Its true that Barcelona failed to create an impact on the game. However, there are two players who delivered great performances and fought till the final whistle.
Wague had a great game. He was a pivotal player in the defense. He played with confidence and showed that he carries a lot of potential. Furthermore, Wague also linked up with his midfield and he was seen doing his best to be as involved as he can.
Overall, this has been a great outing for Wague. I do want him to get more game time in this season and hopefully, we’ll see a new star.
Vidal ended up as the man of the match and surely deserved it. He created a lot of pressure on the opposition. He completely changed the state of the game right after coming in 57th minute. Vidal was also the part in the second goal, therefore, the rightful man of the match.
