Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is the most trending news on the sports news today. FC Barcelona’s former president, Josep Bartomeu has been arrested by the Barcelona police. This is not the first time we are watching controversial news related to FC Barcelona. However, this is surely surprising and came out of nowhere. Oscar Grau, the chief executive officer of the club, and Roman Gomez (Head of Legal Counsel) have also been arrested alongside Josep. All three of them are accused to be involved in the BarcaGate scandal.
JOSEP BARTOMEU ARRESTED
BarcaGate is a scandal that took place during Barto’s era at the Catalonia club. This basically meant that Barto or the main administrations of the club were paying the PR Company, I3 just to clear everything negative related to Bartomeu’s image. This included his social image as well as his online image. They were also underrating the image of many players that served the club during Josep Bartomeu’s time at FC Barcelona.
This is not the first time that the BarcaGate scandal has hit the breaking news. This scandal is pretty old and Barto got lucky when it got popular for the first time. I3 Company and the FC Barcelona board claimed that every accusation against them is false. They also issued a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers that also claimed that every accusation at the club regarding corruption or money laundering is false. There was also no evidence at that time to make any move against the club or the president.
However, the Catalan police checked the Camp Nou offices yesterday. They raided the office to look for documents regarding the BarcaGate scandal investigation and were very lucky to do so. The police found some valuable evidence and they left the Camp Nou office within half an hour. They went direct to the house of Josep Bartomeu and arrested him.
Here is the official statement released by the club;
Regarding the entry and search by the Catalan Police force this morning at the Camp Nou offices by order of the Instructing Court number 13 in Barcelona, which is in charge of the case relating to the contacting of monitoring services on social networks, FC Barcelona has offered up their full collaboration to the legal and police authorities to help make clear facts which are subject to investigation.
The information and documentation requested by the judicial police force relate strictly to the facts relative to this case.
FC Barcelona expresses its utmost respect for the judicial process in place and for the principle of presumed innocence for the people affected within the remit of this investigation.
There is no word from Bartomeu until now and he is going to have his say in front of the judge. Victor Font who is a very likely candidate to become the next FC Barcelona president also spoke about the issue;
“Logically, it’s a sad day for Barcelona because it affects the club’s reputation as an institution”
As a matter of fact, many people besides Laporte had their word on this issue.
Joan Laporta said;
“Although he did not have a good administration, he still has been president of FC Barcelona and it is news that is not pleasant for anyone. The truth is that it is shocking news, certainly.”
Joan Gaspart and Enric Masip also commented by saying;
“I’m sure that Bartomeu is not worried because he has done nothing wrong.” (Joan Gaspart)
“We have now four years that we leave one problem and enter another. The mismanagement is such that the police comes in and there is no one even to go and give a press conference.” (Enric Masip)
It is natural to hear many big figures commenting on this issue because this is a huge matter. However, the final word is yet to come and that is what we are looking forward to as well.
FC Barcelona always manages to stay at the top of the headlines. This goes to show that football is actually more than a game. Apart from all the emotions and feelings attached to the sport, there is a hell of a lot of dirty politics going on at the back as well. This is also an eye-opener that what we see on the internet might not always be true. Influential people can afford to make any sort of image they want people to see.
Therefore, this news is not just to read and comment on Josep’s arrest, but also to realize. Anyway, it is too early to jump to conclusions now and this story is going to unfold further now and it is not going to stop here. Let’s just see what the police make of the entire situation and whether or not Josep is 100% guilty.
