Welcome back to TalkBarca. In this article, we are going to discuss the Match Review of Inter vs Barcelona. What a night at the San Siro. Barcelona introduced its younger squad to the Champions League stage, and did it not deliver? We didn’t have any sort of pressure heading into this game. We didn’t demand our players to must grab the win for us. Yet, they did. This is what I want to see. This is the true potential we have. Barcelona is not about big names. Barcelona is about the right playing tactics with the right mentality.
We went away from home, and dominated the home team. I am specifically going to mention this, and I am going to keep mentioning it again and again that our young team dominated Inter Milan. Inter is currently bossing in the Italian league. However, our young guns went away to their home, and showed who the real boss is. This is what I want from my team. We should not take any fixture lightly. We must look to win every other game. Just like I said in my Match Preview, we did maintain our winning streak.
I cannot emphasise on the importance of winning streaks. It’s the momentum. Momentum is a major thing in football. Look at Liverpool. They often slip up in games, and they regularly concede goals. Yet, they find a way out of it. This is because they are having a winning momentum. Their momentum allows them to figure out ways to step out of pressure. This is what I want at FC Barcelona as well. Obviously, we have ended as the group winners, and we are not yet aware of who we might face in the Round of 16. However, things have started to look really good.
INTER VS BARCELONA MATCH REVIEW
The Serie A giants are dropped into Europa League. Meanwhile, Dortmund has qualified as the second team from our group. Major credits goes to our young star, Ansu Fati. Ansu Fati scored the final, and the decisive goal of the match which sent Inter straight to Europa. This is Inter’s second successive season in which they failed to go past the group stages in Champions League. Inter has been poor in the Champions League, but, who cares? I only care about my team, and my team has delivered it on the night.
If you consider Inter’s performance though, you can see that Inter did try to dominate us in the earlier moments of the game. Inter tried to keep the ball to itself, and tried its best to dominate us with ball possession. Even at home, they failed to maintain regular possession. As the match progressed, Inter became hungrier and really desperate to score goals. Inter focused on excessive long range shooting, and constant attacking in the dying moments of the game. However, that was more of an emotional rather than a tactical gameplay from the players. This is what lead to their loss.
Romelu Lukaku was once again really poor in front of goal. He miserably failed to deliver what the team demanded from him. Romelu was keen to blast the ball from 20 yards out rather than making clever or overlapping runs. Overall, Inter was nowhere in this fixture. Barcelona had completely grabbed Inter Milan by its neck. I would rate tonight’s performance as one of our best performances in the Champions League this season. Inter vs Barcelona was a heavily anticipated fixture. The fans did expect of Barcelona going on with a young squad. However, a fine win has stunned the footballing world.
INTER VS BARCELONA MATCH REVIEW – STARTING LINEUP
Neto started in goal. I really appreciate Valverde of giving full 90 minutes to the young goalkeeper rather than subbing him in for Ter Stegen. Neto knew in the back of his mind that he had to make a statement in this fixture. He was aware that this was his moment to make his name. Well, he did. Neto was undoubtedly, one of our best performers on the pitch. He came in as a Ter Stegen replacement, and he did not disappoint.
Neto made about 5-6 good saves in the game. This is a huge figure for a young goalkeeper who has zero exposure in A team football. Neto was also verbally really active with his fullbacks. This showed that he is a future leader at FC Barcelona. Neto kept guiding his defenders about where a man is or when they should move forward. I am actually amazed that we have such a great talent on our bench.
Our bench is literally one of the finest in entire Europe. We just need to step back in form. By the looks of it, we are returning to be the FC Barcelona which the entire Europe is afraid of.
Valverde operated with 3 Fullbacks instead of traditional 4. Lenglet, Umtiti, and Todibo started as fullbacks. All 3 French Internationals paired up to form a wall. However, I am still not really amused by our defence. The problems are still there, and we need to figure them out really fast.
Todibo was playing with energy. It was visible in his game that he desperately needed A team football, and is willing to put in the work for it. However, Umtiti didn’t click at all. I think Umtiti was the worst out of all our 3 defenders. Lenglet played his usual game, nothing special from him either.
Are these players taking advantage of being the senior players in the squad? I really thought that at the end of the day, players know that they are going to be in the lineup, so why put in effort for that? This is the wrong attitude and can cost us anytime. Therefore, we must look to solve our defensive issues as soon as possible.
Valverde operated with yet another versatile lineup in this game. As mentioned above, he played 3 defenders. Furthermore, he included one holding midfielder, and 4 attacking midfielders.
Rakitic played as the holding midfielder. Alena and Vidal were the Central Attacking midfielders while Wague, and Firpo played on right and left side respectively. This shows that Valverde had full intentions of high press, and regular counter attacks.
De Jong came in later during the second half in place of Ivan Rakitic. Wague and Firpo enjoyed full 90 minutes on the pitch, and so did Alena and Vidal. These are the players who actually needed these full 90 minutes because they heavily require match confidence.
Overall, I think that the midfield was well organised, and it delivered what the manager demanded it to.
Griezmann and Perez started as the Central Strikers. Carles Perez also ended up on the score sheet courtesy of a good finish from his left foot. Griezmann also had a really good game. He put in a lot of efforts as usual. However, he didn’t end up with a goal. As a fan, this is a bit disappointing, but, Griezmann played the Barcelona way which is playing for the team.
Both forwards were subbed off at 62 and 85th minute respectively. Suarez came in place of Griezmann, and Ansu Fati came in place of Perez. Fati ended up making the headlines. Fati scored in the 86th minute which is just one minute after he came on the pitch.
It was a good effort from Luis Suarez who laid off a good ball to the young Ansu Fati, who managed to finish it past the Inter Milan’s keeper. Ansu Fati ended up as the youngest scorer in the Champions League.
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES
I think Neto really deserves appreciation for the way he played in this game. Away games are really difficult for goalkeepers. When you have zero experience in a stage like Champions League, it is obvious that the player is going to be really nervous.
However, Neto kept really good composure, and managed to make some great saves. I think he really deserves appreciation, and I hope we see more of him in our A team.
Isn’t this one obvious? Ansu Fati ended up as the man of the match from FC Barcelon’s side. Ansu provided his team with the much needed winner, and he left the San Siro in complete stun. What else do you ask for from a 17 year old boy?
