Welcome back to TalkBarca. We are going to discuss the Match Preview of Inter Milan vs Barcelona in this article. It is that time of the week again, when the Asian fans stay up all night to see their team in action. Yes, the Champions League is back. Barcelona is taking on Inter Milan away from home, and this is for sure going to be one hell of a match.
Inter is definitely going to push really hard against us because there is an insane competition going on between Inter and Dortmund for the second place on the points table. Barcelona have already qualified for the Round of 16 having winning the group courtesy of a great win against BVB, and good luck against other teams.
I think Barcelona should not take this fixture lightly. Yes, qualification to the Round of 16 is confirmed, and this is not a fixture to take pressure for. However, Barca is currently on a fine 4 win streak, and the players must look to extend this streak. Obviously, winning this match is going to heavily boost the confidence of every player. Winning here can also send out a message to all the teams that Barcelona is still a heavy threat in Europe.
I also think that Valverde can, and might go easy on his players for this fixture. Winning streaks are great, and winning every game with a big scoreline is obviously really entertaining. However, it can also put a lot of burden on the players. At the end of the day, no matter how good you are as a player, football is a really demanding sport, and every player needs rest.
Therefore, there are chances that some of our big players might be rested for this clash, or might come in second half.
INTER VS BARCELONA MATCH PREVIEW
I mentioned above in our match preview that there is a chance Valverde might rest some of his players. There is a chance that we do not see Lionel Messi in action. He needs to be well rested before the big games. Barcelona have already won the group, and this allows Valverde to carry out any experiment he wants with the team. He might play a top A player’s squad to boost their confidence, and increase chemistry between the players. Or he might introduce young players to give them big matches exposure.
Messi, Busquests, and Suarez can be rested for the upcoming big clashes especially the El Classico. On the other side, Valverde might give more playing time to Umtiti, Alena, Vidal, or even Neto. However, my final verdict is that Valverde is going to go with our A team. Only time can tell.
SQUAD FOR INTER VS BARCELONA
The club named a squad of the following players for the clash against Inter. These players include,
Ter Stegen, I. Rakitic, Sergio, Todibo, Suárez, Neto, Lenglet, M. Wague, Griezmann, Aleñá, F. De Jong, Vidal, Umtiti, Junior, Iñaki Peña, C. Pérez, Riqui Puig, Ansu Fati, R. Araujo and Morer.
Nelson Semedo, Arthur, Ousmane Dembélé and Jordi Alba are out due to their respective injuries. Lionel Messi, Gerrard Pique, and Sergio Roberto are rested by the manager.
Ter Stegen is the obvious choice to start in goal if Valverde decides to play his A team against Inter Milan. Ter Stegen is in fine form, and had yet another great game against Mallorca in the past week. Unfortunately, he was unable to keep a clean sheet due to defensive errors. However, he had a great game. He was also able to provide an assist to Antoine Griezmann, which was his major highlight from the game.
Overall, Ter is a key player to us. He is definitely one of our top 3 performers in this season. Both, Stegen and Messi are a life saver for FC Barcelona. I can literally write books on how good Ter Stegen is. I hope he continues with the same form for the entire season, and many more years to come.
On the other hand, there are also chances that Valverde might choose Neto to start the game. The chance of this happening is actually a lot. If it happens, it can be a great confidence booster for the young goalkeeper. If Neto is given sufficient playing time at a stage like the Champions League, it can really groom his game and bring out the best in him. Neto is a really natural, and well reputed goalkeeper in his age category. It is time for him to show everyone that he is really the Barcelona quality. Let’s wait and see what happens.
I would predict our regular 4 defenders to start in this game. I doubt Jordi Alba to be involved in this fixture. Therefore, Junior Firpo is the most likely player to start off things at the Left Back. Roberto is not included in the squad. This makes room for Mousa Wague. Wague really needs game time. Champions League stage is perfect for someone like Wague to not only boost confidence, but, also increase the authority in his game.
Meanwhile, Umtiti and Lenglet are going to operate as Center Backs. Obviously, in the absence of Pique, Umtiti has also good chances of being included in the squad. I also think that Valverde is going to give him more playing time. He must be eager to take the opportunity given to him, and make the most out of it.
Furtermore, Todibo can also get some playing minutes in this fixture. If he does, Todibo must grab the opportunity with both hands. It is not really often for a player like Todibo to get playing time in a Champions League fixture. Therefore.
Rakitic, De Jong, and Busquests are likely midfield trio to start in this fixture. If either of Rakitic or Busquests are rested, then Arturo Vidal can be started to offer his services. De Jong is the most likely starter out of all our midfield options. He is having a great season. I am a big fan of the way this guy operates in the midfield. He just knows everything.
De Jong and Busquests together are a nightmare for any opposition. When you top that up with the technical qualities of Ivan Rakitic, you can surely comprehend that Inter is in for a big trouble.
On the other hand, Valverde might go for a totally opposite lineup than this. He might start with our younger midfielders such as Alena. We have to wait and see how FC Barcelona lines up in this fixture. Something really obvious is that the lineup is going to be a mixture of senior and younger players. This way the B team players are not fully pressurized of solely performing by themselves. They have seniors to help them.
This is overall, going to boost the chemistry within our squad. It is going to give a lot of confidence to our young talents who are the future of this club.
Griezmann is likely player to start on the Left wing. Messi is obviously not going to be on the right as he is rested by the manager. Luis Suarez can begin things as the Center Forward. I expect a lot from our front three men. I just want them to develop good chemistry, and destroy Inter’s defense. Griezmann might not start as the left winger if Valverde chooses to put Ansu Fati in the starting lineup.
Ansu Fati is going to heavily influence the game. He is one of the young players who has already taken Champions League exposure. He knows how this format works, and what kind of pressure to expect. Therefore, if he starts, I really expect him to deliver an amazing performance.
Carles Perez is the likely player to start on the right wing. The absence of Messi means that Perez is the obvious starter in this game. Perez also falls in the category of your B team players who heavily require playing time. Perez didnot get A team exposure after Messi returned from his injury. However, this is once again a great opportunity for him to show case his capabilities.
Yes, I do want to see our youngsters doing their wonders, but, someone I really want to score is Antoine Griezmann. Antoine might also start as the Striker ahead of Suarez. Personally, I don’t think that Suarez needs to start this game. The reason is that he is one of those players who have played the most minutes this season. There is no use of stressing him without proper need. Let’s see what happens.
