Welcome to TalkBarca. Today, we are going to take a look at Granada vs Barcelona Match review. It’s another away game for Barca and another disappointing result. Granada beat us 2-0 at their home. What’s most frustrating is that we didn’t look dominant over them not even for a single minute. There were a lot of mistakes by Valverde and our players. We have a lot to discuss. So, without any delay, let’s start our Match Review.
GRANADA VS BARCELONA MATCH REVIEW
Granda hosted us last night. Our recent performances had already given us a confidence boost. However, right from the start of the game, Granada held us tight and did not allow us to play well until the last whistle.
Granada’s defense was on point. Barcelona only managed to create only 3-4 chances in the entire game courtesy to a perfect defensive setup by Granada. Furthermore, their midfield and attack shined aswell. The midfielders were playing their hearts out, helping their defense on numerous occasions. Overall, Granada was playing with a very high spirit as if it was a Champions League final or something.
Meanwhile, Barcelona really lacked the rhythm and never got going. On paper, Barca did enjoy more possession. However, in the game, our passes were being intercepted or cut down again and again by the home team. Our passing never got going with the flow and we suffered a bitter defeat.
The lineup for Granada vs Barcelona was expected to be similar to the one against Valencia or Dortmund. However, we witness a huge rotation in the squad as we predicted in our match preview. Although we saw it coming, we never expected such poor tactics and below average lineup from Valverde. Valverde disappointed us again with a poor midfield setup and wasting Griezmann.
Ter Stegen started in goal. This is the most obvious choice. As a disappointed fan’s point of view, I am somewhere glad Valverde did not change his goalkeeping option.
Gerrard Pique and Lenglet started as Center Backs. There is a very little backup for this position and therefore, both of these players are getting full minutes in every fixture. Furthermore, both failed to influence the game as they should. Pique is an experienced contender and therefore, he must lead the defensive line. However, he looked less confident during the game.
Semedo started on the Right Back and Junior Firpo started on the Left Back. However, Semedo was shifted to the left when Ansu Fati was subbed in for Junior Firpo and Sergio Roberto then played at Right back. Valverde subbed off Junior Firpo at 45 minutes. I completely understand that he had a dreadful night as a defender. However, he is our only true option at the left back. Substituting him at half time for a bad performance will only lower his morale.
I mean, Firpo is playing his first competitive game as a starter. If you punish him like this for a bad performance, he would not get the confidence to do what he does best. When he plays next time, only if Valverde plays him, he would play a very conservative game. It’s simple because he would know that he would be out of the team for one single mistake.
This midfield choice is by far the worst midfield setup Valverde has played. We expected Busquests, Arthur and De Jong to start or at least 2 of these 3. Instead, Valverde used Rakitic on the left midfield side. Sergio Roberto started as Right mid and De Jong played as a center midfielder.
This experiment in the midfield cost us a lot. Rakitic was not in his best form. Furthermore, De Jong – Arthur chemistry was absent. Overall, I would say that our midfield choice had already cost the match before the actual kickoff.
By now, it is pretty evident that Griezmann and Suarez cannot play together. Yet, Valverde started Griezmann on the Left wing, Suarez started as a striker, and Carlos Perez started as Right winger. Suarez-Griezmann Due is already lacking a lot of chemistry on paper.
If Valverde wanted to go with Suarez and Griezmann, he could have made Messi start alongside them to test the MSG Trio. MSG attacking trio has its own deficiencies and loopholes in it. However, it would have given Valverde a chance to judge if this trio works.
Our attack was lacking fire and huger for goals. Most importantly, our attack was completely isolated. Our midfielders did not supply the ball to attackers in the right areas. Therefore, we ended the game with one shot on goal.
Granada vs Barcelona Match Review would not be complete without discussing the notable individual performances from Barca players. So, let’s dive into it!
Granada vs Barcelona was the first Staring game for Junior Firpo and he failed to make an impact. Firpo did not impress at all and was substituted at the end of the first half for his poor display. Right at the start of the game, during the second minute, he attempted to pass the ball with a cheeky left foot when he had a clear opportunity to pass it with his right foot. This resulted in the interception of the ball. He made an effort to snatch but could not succeed, and therefore, the opposition player was able to put it in the goal.
After that error, Junior Firpo looked absent throughout the game. He did not demand the ball. He hesitated from moving up the pitch and his overall confidence was shattered. This shows the difference between an experienced player such as Jordi Alba and a new boy in the team.
Rakitic is not the correct midfield option for us. He did manage to win some freekicks, however, he was very poor in delivering final passes and creating chances of any sort. Most importantly, his excessive back passing habit is very annoying. He does not look to take the ball forward, he simply passes it back to Lenglet or Pique. This is not the Barcelona style of play.
Sergi Roberto didn’t shine as well. We know that he is a creative player whether he plays as a right back or in the midfield. However, we didn’t saw anything creative from Roberto. Instead. he gave away the ball very cheaply on several occasions.
Sadly, Griezmann did not shine aswell. He played on the wing again and it is hard to tell whether he was in the game for the entire 90 minutes. Griezmann looked absent throughout the game and there was no significant play from his side. He is our marquee signing of the season and we have high hopes from this lad. We know how good he is in front of the goal. However, if Valverde is going to continue using him like this, then we have already lost another 120 Million and wasted another career.
Suarez and Messi:
Messi had an average game. He played as an attacking midfielder and also dropped deep to create chances. He fed the ball to Ansu Fati on several occasions as Fati was the only player in the team who was trying to make a difference. Overall, it wasn’t the best performance from Messi. He was a little sluggish and sometimes looked too casual on the ball.
On the other side, Luis Suarez disappointed once again. His inconsistent performances are getting too consistent now. It looks difficult for him to have a good season ahead. How many times do we have to say that Suarez shouldn’t be the starter anymore? Perhaps things will change a little bit with Dembele back in the squad.
The only player who looked energetic and charismatic from Barcelona was Ansu Fati. He played with his usual style and kept the defenders on their toes. It felt as if Fati was going to do something amazing whenever he had the possession. Barcelona created 4 goal scoring chances and Ansu Fati was involved in all of those chances.
Arturo played as if he was an academy player. His game really lacks seniority which is required from him at this level. He was running cluelessly on the pitch. Furthermore, he also gave away a penalty through a handball. The rest is history for us.
So, that was all for Granada vs Barcelona Match Review. This is undoubtedly a big loss for us. However, we must look forward now. There are more crucial games coming up. We must look at them and try to win them. What are your thoughts on this game and what do you think about our Match Review? Let us know in the comments section below. Until next time, Visca El Barca!
