FC BARCELONA VS Real Betis Match Review:
FC Barcelona Lineup:
Let’s start with the lineups. We will be discussing both the starting lineup as well as the bench.
The Starting XI:
The manager, Ernesto Valverde had called 18 players for this game. Judging by the squad, it was pretty obvious who the starting 11 would be. The squad felt the emptiness without Lionel Messi and Dembele on the wings and Luis Suarez’s unavailability left a big deficit in the strike position. However, Griezmann took the responsibility and really stepped up when he was needed. He proved to be a satisfactory replacement for the Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez.
Marc Andre Ter Stegen started in goal. Jordi Alba played on his normal left back position. Semedo was performing his duties as the right back. Pretty noticeably, Jordi Alba and Semedo were playing ahead of the Centre Backs. We have seen how these Barcelona wing backs join the attack often to create chances time and time again. Gerrard Pique and Lenglet started in the heart of the defense as expected.
Surprisingly, Busquests played most of the time as a Centre Midfielder and dropped deep only when it was necessary. Frenkie De Jong was on the left mid and Roberto was on the right. The midfield stayed pretty busy throughout the game as De Jong and Roberto linked up plays with the front 3 as well as the wing backs.
Leading the forward line were Rafinha on the left wing, Perez on the right wing, and the fan favorite Antoine Griezmann as the Center Forward. It was a great outing for the attackers. Both Grizzy and Charles Perez got their names on the score sheet. Griezmann also got his first two goals for Barca not to mention 1 assist to Arturo Vidal in the second half.
Barcelona had a pretty stable bench as they headed towards a big fixture on Sunday night. Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Umtiti, and Arthur were among the big names which waited to be subbed on in the game.
On the other side, there were two names the fans wanted to watch eagerly. These include Junior Firpo and the promising young talent, Ansu Fati. Both of them got playing time later on in the game and the fans were satisfied with their performance.
Arturo Vidal was subbed in for Busquests in the 77th minute who got his first goal of the season just after a few minutes. Ansu Fati came in at 78th minute in place of Perez on the right wing and the final substitution was Junior Firpo for Rafinha in the 81st minute.
In-depth Review of Individual performance:
Mats was solid in the goal. The first goal was a slip from the experienced Sergio Busquests and Fekir punished Barca for their mistake. There was absolutely nothing that goalkeeper could do to stop both goals. Both goals were the result of mistakes in the midfield. There wasn’t any mistake from Mats. In fact, Ter Stegen had to be more alert on a few occasions when Real Betis were counter attacking. Therefore, Ter Stegen finishes with a rating of 6.0
Lenglet and Gerrard Pique:
Pique was very positive in the game. He shouted his team to not lose hope even after his team was 1-0 down. Furthermore, he had good snatches and interceptions. Pique also fed some good balls to his midfield and attackers. He finishes a rating of 7.0.
Lenglet also had a decent game. He troubled the attackers a lot and made vital interceptions. His rating was slightly lower than that of Pique. The reason behind it is that he was not much involved in the game as Pique was. Lenglet finishes at 6.0
Jordi Alba was much more visible in this game as compared to the previous ones. He made deeper runs and interacted much more with his attackers. Jordi Alba also got on the score sheet and overall, it was a great outing for him. Jordi Alba’s rating is 8.0
Semedo on the right back delivered a punch as well. However, it was pretty visible that Semedo was a bit reluctant to move ahead often. He did provide an assist to Charles Perez at the 56th minute. Therefore, Semedo finishes with a 6.0 rating.
Ansu Fati, Perez and Rafinha:
Perez was outstanding on the wing. He made his statement clear to Valverde that he needs more first team football. Perez really troubled the opposition defense with high pressing runs. Thus, he won a lot more corners. He also got his name on the score sheet and got a rating of 8.0
Rafina also made good runs. He was much more involved in the plays and made much-needed efforts. Ansu Fati also played a lot in the small game time he received. Coming off the bench, he became the youngest ever player to play for Barca. Just 16 years old, he completely dominated the game. He was also pretty close to scoring a goal. Nevertheless, it was a great outing for him.
Griezmann was the star performer today. He got 2 goals and made himself evident that he is now a Barcelona player. In the previous game, Valverde said that he needs to be much more involved. This is what he exactly did in this game and had a lot of possession in the final third. The fans loved the celebration. He ends up as the man of the match and with a rating of 8.0.
It was a great outing for the home fans. Barcelona had made this clear that they will not step back. This is the right mindset to progress in the season. It is not about being the best team in Europe, but, it is surely about being one of the most competitive teams in Europe. Barcelona has made it clear that despite all the setbacks they will fight back. This is surely going to be a very exciting season. We cannot wait for the upcoming matches.
