Welcome back to TalkBarca. We are writing another FC BARCELONA NEWS ROUNDUP today. There is plenty of stuff to talk about over here. I am going to briefly talk about the sacking of Eric Abidal from the club. We also have to discuss Ter Stegen’s injury and his expected return. Furthermore, we are going to discuss a little about Ronald Koemann and his transfer targets. This article is going to update you with the majority of the news update regarding FC Barcelona. However, I am going to talk about all these things in detail in separate articles. Let’s get started.
BARCELONA NEWS ROUNDUP
ERIC ABIDAL SACKED
Eric Abidal has been sacked as the FC Barcelona technical secretary. There is no doubt that Abidal performed poorly during his time at the club. He did not contribute a lot and lately, his relationship with the players has also not been that good. Therefore, the board took a good step by firing him. However, I have two complaints about this decision. The first one is why did Bartomeu take one extra day to fire him? He could have said goodbye to him on the same day he sacked Quique Setien.
The second thing is that when is Bartomeu going to take a look at himself? He has been hiring coaches and officials and later firing them. However, he never seems to take a look at himself. He is not doing a great job as well and it is going to be great if he resigns as well. The thing is that Barcelona is going through a major crisis right now and everyone needs to play their part if they want things to get better at this club. Bartomeu can help the club, coaches, and the players as well by resigning.
TER STEGEN’S INJURY
Ter Stegen has been having issues lately. However, he kept playing for us because Barcelona was going through a pretty delicate phase in La Liga as well as the Champions League. However, the club and Ter Stegen decided that it was the right time to go through surgery. Ter Stegen went under the knife and everything finished successfully. Ter Stegen’s surgery was a success and he is fine now. However, he is going to be out of action for 2 and a half months. This means that he is going to come back after 1.5 months of the new season.
RONALD KOEMANN AND ALFRED SCHREUDER
We all know that Ronald Koemann is officially a part of the club right now as the new coach. However, there is another new personality at the club who I would like to introduce to everyone and that is Alfred Schreuder. Alfred is going to be the assistant coach for Ronald Koemann at FC Barcelona. Now, this is pretty interesting because Alfred Schreuder is indeed a pretty promising figure. He has a lot of experience and has one of the strongest CVs for an assistant coach. He is another Dutchman and therefore, Ronald and he can have better chemistry.
Schreuder enjoyed brilliant success as an assistant for Nagelsmann’s at Hoffenheim. This must be a great experience for Alfred Schreuder considering the season Leipzig currently had. Alfred then moved on to Ajax where he worked alongside Eric Ten Haag during the 18/19 season. He was there at Ajax when they had a brilliant season making it to the semi-finals of the Champions League. He must have learned a lot under him and his vision of playing league football and outside in Europe must have been improved. Not to forget, Ajax is another club with Cruyff’s vision.
Nagelsmann later left Hoffenheim to coach RB Leipzig and Schreuder moved to Hoffenheim as the coach in 19/20 season. However, he did not enjoy a lot of success and Hoffenheim did not flourish a lot under him. Therefore, he was sacked after only one season. Now he is back as an assistant coach under Ronald Koemann at FC Barcelona. The man who recommended Schreuder to Koemann was Frenkie De Jong. De Jong told Koemann about his work at Ajax and this played a major role in the appointment of Alfred Schreuder. This also shows Frenkie’s growing influence in the club.
VAN DE BEEK TO BARCELONA
Another major and trending news right now is Van De Beek’s arrival to Barcelona. We brought one Dutchman to the club, Ronald Koemann. Then we brought another Dutchman, Alfred Schreuder. Now we are talking about another Dutchman, Van De Beek. Koemann highlighted that he wants Van De Beek at FC Barcelona as soon as he took charge of the club. This is obvious that Koemann must have laid out some of his transfer demands to the board when they approached to sign him. However, this is an important discussion about whether Van should come or not?
Van De Beek is a great player and is one of the pivotal figures in Ajax’s midfield. However, the major concern regarding his transfer to Barcelona is whether he is going to fit in this squad or not? Yes, we do need depth on the bench as well. However, we cannot afford to have another Malcolm, Coutinho, or even Griezmann type scenario. There is no use of buying Van De Beek if Koemann is going to keep him on the bench and let other players play instead. The club is already deprived of financial resources and must think responsibly.
Van is a very versatile player. He can play as number 10, 8, and also as number 6. However, there is no specific role in our Barcelona team where I think Van De Beek can fit in. He has a lot of quality when it comes to playing in the midfield. He has a bit of every quality whether as a holding player or a playmaker. However, there is no use of buying him if we cannot play him regularly. This is something Ronald Koemann must be aware of as well and if Van comes, then it must be significant.
The pre-season time is almost here and we are going to be flooded with transfer rumors all the time. One transfer rumor which hit the news lately is that Luis Suarez could be on his way to Ajax FC. If you would like to know my thoughts on this, then yes. I think Suarez should move out of the club. He has been a great player for us and served Barcelona during his peak years. He has been a part of our glory days. However, every good thing must come to an end. I do not blame him.
Suarez is definitely aging and maintaining superbly high fitness levels such as Cristiano or Messi is not a piece of cake for everyone. We cannot blame Suarez for not having 100% fitness. However, yes he must take his game seriously as he is still the starting number 9 for our club. However, that is a discussion for another day. The rumors hit the news about Suarez is moving to Ajax and later Luis Suarez spoke about it. Apparently, Luis Suarez does not intend on leaving FC Barcelona. Luis feels that he has something more to give to the club.
Now, this is a debatable statement. It is true that Suarez still manages to find the net for us on a lot of occasions. However, it is Lionel Messi who does make things easier for him at a lot of times. It is without a doubt that Suarez still manages to score some breathtaking goals. An example of this is the goal against Bayern recently which was the only goal FC Barcelona scored itself. However, Suarez can be an issue at times. The game against Bayern can provide another example of this.
We saw that Suarez was clumsy at times. There were a few moments where he could have outpaced Alaba but that was never happening. Suarez looks unfit and there was no way he was winning a race against Alaba or I guess any other player on the Munich team. There were also a few moments where he did not intend of running or making any effort at all.
This attitude and declining fitness levels cannot be accepted if Ronald Koemann is indeed looking to reshape the entire squad. The seniors must not be given any advantage and everything should be done on the basis of merit.
