Welcome to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is the Mid Season Review for FC Barcelona. We are at the halfway point of the season and there is a lot to discuss about FC Barcelona’s current form. We are currently at the top of the La Liga Table with 40 points in 19 games. Real Madrid are in 2nd place with 40 points as well. At the moment, Barcelona is ahead of Real Madrid on Goal Difference. We lost only 3 games throughout the season 2019/20 and all those losses came away from home.
Barcelona has been lethal at Camp Nou grass. We have stayed unbeaten all season at our home. No matter how bad we’re performing, we still manage to find ways of not losing at the Camp Nou. So, without further ado, let’s start our Mid Season Review of 2019/20 and analyze our performances in La Liga as well as Champions League.
FC BARCELONA MID SEASON REVIEW
LA LIGA:
We had a sloppy start at the beginning of the season. There were a lot of injury issues as well. Our main man, Lionel Messi was also injured at the start of the season. Griezmann was also stripped off a lot of playing time at the start of the season. Suarez was heavily out of goalscoring form. This all meant that Barcelona was in deep trouble at the start of the season. We also lost our first game which was away from home against Athletico Bilbao.
However, it was not very late that we started to shift the momentum to our side and start focusing on results. Ernesto Valverde kept making a lot of stupid decisions and wrong choices. Still, we managed to win games due to brilliance from Ter Stegen or our forwards.
Messi returned and quickly started to perform. Furthermore, Messi also pushed Suarez to get in good goalscoring form. Messi won many games for us single-handedly, just like he always does. Ter Stegen also managed to save us on countless occasions and lead us to many wins in La Liga.
Barcelona is currently at the top of La Liga with Real Madrid in 2nd place with equal points. This is a crucial time for us to establish dominance and attack every team which comes our way. We surely need to win the Liga. We just need to show the will.
Something we must take into account seriously is our away performances. We struggle away from home and we must improve on this. If Barcelona can play the same lethal football away from home, there is no team in Europe that can stop us. Yes, I repeat, no team. Whether it is Liverpool, PSG, or Juventus, you just name it. All we need to do is continue with passion in away games and Barcelona is going to be unstoppable.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE:
Barcelona was drawn in the Group of Death in the Champions League. We had big names like Inter Milan, Dortmund, and Slavia Prague in our table. Some gurus even predicted that Barcelona might not make it through to the Round of 16, considering our sloppy form at the start of the season.
However, Barcelona players picked themselves up and managed to win games. Luck also played a huge role especially in the Champions League encounters against Slavia and Dortmund. We kept winning matches and finished at the top of the table in our group.
Our last game of the group was against Inter Milan and that is one of the most special games in the 2019/20 season. Knockout rounds in the Champions League are going to be tougher than hell. We are surely going to struggle especially away from home. Barcelona has recently exposed their weaknesses and teams coming from outside Spain in the Champions League are going to make sure that they push us to our weaker sides. Now is the time to keep composure and show the world what we are made up of.
I mentioned above that away performances are going to count a lot when it comes to having confidence. We must have the right mindset to dominate every team. I can surely say that we are going to be extremely difficult on our home grass. However, there are tonnes of possibilities that we score 3 at our home and conceded 5 away from home. Nope, I am not talking about Liverpool. I am just making a point that we need to keep our legs and our hearts strong too in order to regain the Champions League glory Lionel Messi promised us last season.
BEST TEAM PERFORMANCES:
Our best performances in Champions League came against Inter Milan in San Siro and against Dortmund at Camp Nou. I would specifically like to talk about the game against Inter Milan in which we introduced our B squad. Our young players dominated Inter at their home. Furthermore, we showed that the Barcelona philosophy comprises of playing with the right tactics and playing on our strengths. Big names and star power is not required at our club. We just need proper football sense as per our philosophy to lead to glory.
Our Second best game in the Champions League was against Dortmund where all our frontmen scored and we completely dominated the German Yellow Wall. We didn’t perform well in the first fixture against Borrusia Dortmund. However, we bounced back in the second fixture. Dortmund was in hot water against us. They did start to play good football in the end and Jadon Sancho was able to score a goal. However, it was too late.
I would like to highlight that even though we finished at the top of the Champions League table, we were not the best in terms of scoring goals. Out of 16 teams that have qualified for the Round of 16, 10 teams have scored more goals than us. This is not good in terms of attack. We need to be lethal in counter-attacks and buildups because stronger teams only give 1-2 scoring chances, and if we cannot avail them, then our Champions League crisis will continue.
