Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is the Match Review of Elche CF vs FC Barcelona. Barcelona traveled away to face Elche. The odds were stacked against the Blaugranas as they had an incomplete squad and knew nothing about what to expect from the opposition. However, FC Barcelona pulled off an amazing 0-2 win with star boys Frenkie De Jong and Riqui Puig on the scoresheet.
It was definitely a great day for the players as well as the fans. However, there are still many loopholes in this Barcelona system. Here is the Match Review of the game discussing the first half and second half individually.
ELCHE CF VS FC BARCELONA MATCH REVIEW
Barcelona played this game without Lionel Messi. Therefore, Martin Braithwaite started the game. Griezmann, Dembele, and Braith lead the attacking lineup. Frenkie served his role as the pivotal player in the midfield. However, the strongest area of FC Barcelona was their defense. Antoine, Martin, and Dembele were not quite venomous and therefore, the team play was very ineffective in the final third. Dembele kept throwing in crosses and made good dribbles. However, they lead to nothing and the team was not playing very convincingly.
It was Frenkie De Jong who found the back of the net to give his side the lead. It first seemed as if Antoine Griezmann had scored that goal. However, it was De Jong who touched the ball on its way to the net. Regardless of whoever scored, Barcelona got its lead and it was enough to keep the domination going. Antoine and Braithwaite also showed a lack of involvement. Dembele kept dropping down to win the ball and help his team defensively. Therefore, he deserves extra credit for that. However, the major performers were the defenders and De Jong.
De Jong is really surprising the critics with his consistency. He is putting in world-class performances week in and week out. The same applies to Sergio Busquests. Busqi is getting better every week and his lack of form is now improving. Pedri, the youngster is also a solid part of FC Barcelona’s overall midfield gameplay.
Overall it was an okay half from the Blaugranas. The players seemed satisfied as they had the lead going in for the break. Ronald Koemann had that look on his face that there is more to come from the team in the second half.
FIRST HALF: ELCHE 0-1 FC BARCELONA
The second half performance was pretty similar to the one in the first half. The players kept playing with similar intensity and it seemed that the half-time talk from Koemann was not very effective. Oscar Mingueza slipped at one moment and gave away the ball. Elche almost got their equalizer. However, the man between the sticks, Marc Andre Ter Stegen proved to be very good for them and saved Barcelona from losing its lead. Barcelona did not create any effective chance either. Soon, Trincao replaced Dembele.
Trincao injected a feeling of excitement and energy into the overall play. This was one of the better performances from him in a long time. He made two good attempts at goal. However, he is just unlucky not to see his name on the scoresheet today. There was nothing significant from his fellow attackers, Griezmann and Martin Braithwaite.
Puig came in and added to the energy in the FC Barcelona gameplay. Puig also got on the scoresheet which is amazing to see as a fan of the young boy. He got his well-deserved first goal for the club. De Jong set up Puig who made a brilliant movement to score the goal.
The game ended with FC Barcelona scoring 2 goals and a clean sheet for Marc Andre Stegen. Barcelona now advances in the points table to third place and is very well in the title race.
This is FC Barcelona’s 7th consecutive away win now. The players definitely look fatigued and tired. However, what matters most is that they managed to win the game. Barcelona and Koemann really needed this win to keep themselves alive in the title race and also to keep their confidence higher.
A good day for the fans and the team.
