Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is the BARCELONA VS NAPOLI MATCH REVIEW. All of the Champions League Round of 16 matches have ended and Barcelona is among those teams which have qualified to the QFs. Barcelona hosted Napoli on the Camp Nou surface. It was a night which promised a lot of attacking football and aggression from both sides. This Champions League encounter had entertainment written all over it. Setien had a tough task to accomplish. Our players had a tough task to accomplish. The odds were stacked against us. However, Barcelona beat Napoli with score 3-1.
Yes you guys already know about it. Now we are going to talk about the match in detail. We are specifically going to break down this article into the first and second half of the game. Yes, there are going to be more details in this as well, but we are going to discuss the lineup in a separate article later on in the day. Let’s talk about the major highlights of the game. Barcelona started with a positive mentality and Napoli also looked to dominate the opposition. Surprisingly, Napoli wanted more of the ball in this game unlike first-leg.
However, our players played patiently and it did not take a lot of time for Barcelona to register the first goal. I think almost every player in the Barca color played brilliantly. In this CL competition, we are more concerned with results than performances. However, we are going to talk about our players later. I think Barcelona has a lot to improve on their game play. Still there are some positives to take from this game. Lionel Messi was amazing. His form can mean Barcelona can progress further and further in this competition. Let’s talk about this game first.
BARCELONA VS NAPOLI MATCH REVIEW
Barcelona started the game calmly. They were looking forward to controlling the game right from the start. The players did not panic despite the fact that Napoli was keen to have more possession. This was something which is against our natural playing style yet the players looked comfortable. In the 10th minute, Lenglet scored a header which gave Barcelona the early lead. The energy levels of the players looked even higher after Barcelona registered the first goal. The stadium was empty, but the reaction of fans on online streaming platforms was full of energy.
Tweets began flooding in and social media posting showed as if Barcelona had already won that game. However, the players remained calm and kept playing their football with ease. It was Messi who scored next with a brilliant effort. He was marked by 3-4 players, yet he somehow managed to find space and somehow finish the ball at the far post. The players looked extremely happy with that goal and Lionel made his mark on another important game once again. It was then De Jong who supplied another ball to Messi. Messi controlled it on the chest and finished it.
However, that goal was disallowed because it was given as a handball. I think that this is a debatable VAR decision. That never looked like a handball. Anyway, the Barca players did not create a lot of fuss about it and kept playing. Messi did look concerned about it though. He was seen discussing the issue at half time as well. However, it was a few minutes later when Messi was fouled inside the box by Koulibaly and Barcelona got awarded with a penalty. That foul threatened the fans that Messi might be injured. However, he was fine and Suarez scored from the spot.
There were doubts about Messi’s physical conditions before the second half started. However, the Argentenian showed up to play the second half as well. He looked better and the clash with Koulibaly did not seem to trouble him at any point. Napoli looked a bit frustrated and they wanted to get things done fast. However, Ter Stegen was always alert and Barcelona’s defense showed positive performance as well. Mertens had a good effort on goal which was blocked as well. Napoli players looked urgent in the second half and they started looking less hopeful.
However, one positive thing about the Italian team and Gattuso was that they never looked mentally out. They were always attacking with full energy and their body language was showing that they still believed that they could win. However, Barcelona was able to cause many problems for them. De Jong was a boss in the midfield in this game. He was moving here and there and made his impact on all parts of the pitch. There were moments when De Jong did not let us feel the absence of Sergio Busquests. This shows his quality and authority with the ball.
Around the 81st or 82nd minute, Milik headed the ball perfectly into the goal. Ter Stegen was beaten all ends up with that header. That was a brilliant effort from Milik, but he was given offside. Therefore, the goal was not given. One questionable aspect from Barcelona’s side is that Ansu Fati and Puig did not get any playing time. The manager, Quique Setien did hint that both or any one out of the two players might be on the pitch. However, he subbed off Griezmann with Monchu. That was an unusual sub. However, Barcelona won 4-2 on aggregate and have Bayern next.
