Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is Barcelona vs Napoli – Lineup and Players Ratings. We talked about the match in our previous article. We covered the first half and second half of the game separately. Now we are going to talk about the lineup and are going to discuss every player in detail. We are specifically going to talk about each player in this current game and are also going to compare his current form with his previous form. I think this is going to be an interesting discussion. Therefore, let’s not waste a lot of time and get started.
BARCELONA VS NAPOLI – LINEUPS AND PLAYER RATINGS
TER STEGEN (GOALKEEPER) 7/10
Ter Stegen ended the game with a 7/10 rating. I think this is fair enough because he was not really involved in the game. Yes, he was there when his team needed him. However, the defensive lineup in front of him showed authority and dominance. Therefore, Napoli’s front men were not allowed to test the German goalkeeper too often. Sadly, he could not end the game with a well-deserved clean sheet. However, team results come first than individual achievements or records.
GERRARD PIQUE (CENTER BACK) 7.5/10
Pique ended with a 7.5 rating. He proved to us again why we rate him so much high. Pique was an absolute beast in the air and broke down every Napoli aerial attacking move. He stood firm in his position and was there when his team needed him. However, he made a few minor and one kind of major mistake where Barcelona could have conceded a goal. It was during the early moments of the game and I think that he caught himself pretty well after that. It is good that Barcelona did not concede a goal.
Therefore, his mistake can be avoided. However, it is always important to mention the mistakes or weaknesses of your players. This shows a deeper analysis and proves that we have a good check on our players. Overall, it was a solid performance from the El Presidente and I think that 7.5 rating in such a crucial game is a pretty decent effort. I think the best part about Gerrard Pique is that he has really collected himself back in this season. He was looking clumsy earlier before the lockdown. However, he looks like a man on a mission now. Positive for us!
CLEMENT LENGLET (CENTER BACK) 8.5/10
Lenglet ended with an 8.5 and I think that it is totally worth it. He is the second-highest-rated Barcelona player in this game and he truly deserves it. Let’s just not talk about this game for a while and take a look back at how things used to be in Barcelona. I remember Gerrard and Umtiti used to be the first choices CBs. If it was not Umtiti then Varmaelen used to play or vice versa. Lenglet was never in the books at FC Barcelona. However, he was once given a chance and then there was no going back.
Lenglet has worked hard since day one and he still does. He had his problems in the past but this is something every player goes through. Now he is an undoubted starter for us. Lenglet displayed a true defensive master class in this game. He was basically a nightmare for the Napoli players. He was running here and there. He blocked shots and made crucial tackles. Furthermore, he added fuel to the fire by opening the Barcelona scoring with a brilliant header. This is indeed one of the best performances of the season from Lenglet.
NELSON SEMEDO (RIGHT BACK) 8/10
Semedo ended with an 8. I think the Portuguese young full-back absolutely bossed the Napoli attackers. Furthermore, he was also lethal in terms of attacking and initiating many attacks. Semedo was one of the most confident players on the pitch. He was playing as if there was no pressure at all and pocketing Italian attackers was casual for him. This performance is surely going to silence many haters who wanted Semedo to leave the club. There were also many critics against him that he should not be the first choice Right Back in Barcelona.
However, Semedo shuts everyone up with this performance. I remember his one run that he made within the midfield in which he outpaced almost 5-6 Napoli players. Furthermore, he was a beast one the Right side. He did not let Lorenzo Insigne do literally anything significant. He caused problems for him and everyone on the pitch was able to see that. I think Semedo dropped 0.5 or 1 rating point due to a slightly less effective performance in the second half. His first half was comparatively better. Furthermore, Insigne also had a better second half. However, Semedo delivered a punch!
JORDI ALBA (LEFT BACK) 7/10
I think Jordi Alba also did a great job. He did what he was sent to do. I think Jordi Alba combines really well with his midfield and attackers. He adds another bit of lethal-ity in the Barcelona gameplay. His passing sense, vision, and ability to read the game is as good as any other midfielder. Therefore, I think he had an amazing game as well. These ratings either 7 or 8 do not actually define the player’s actual performance. I think these ratings are based on different stats.
However, they do give a proper idea of how the player played. Jordi fulfilled his role excellently. I think his good form and the way he combines with other players can be really beneficial for us. Jordi also fulfills his defensive role perfectly. Therefore, he is a crucial player for us heading into the tough game against Bayern.
IVAN RAKITIC (MIDFIELD) 7/10
Rakitic had a tough job to handle in the midfield. He was playing in absence of Sergio Busquests and that meant that he had to carry the midfield. Well, he did not actually carry the midfield, but I think that he did a pretty decent job. He made crucial passes and his involvement in the midfield was visible. Furthermore, Rakitic also contributed defensively as he made many important tackles and won the ball for Barcelona on many occasions. He also got an assist by playing the ball to Lenglet. However, he made a needless foul in the box which led to a penalty kick. The Italian side registered their first and only goal of the game due to that. That goal did not seem to harm Barcelona a lot. However, he should have been careful in tackling the players inside the box.
SERGIO ROBERTO (MIDFIELD) 7/10
I think Roberto played more of the Sergio Busquests role today than Ivan Rakitic did. Sergio Roberto was the unsung hero inside the Barcelona midfield. He connected many passes with his defenders as well as his attackers. Furthermore, he was also working constantly to regain possession of FC Barcelona. Sergio Roberto made his mark in the game. However, there might not be many people who noticed his expertise in the field. I think he was putting a similar amount of effort as his fellow midfielders. He was pivotal in the midfield and definitely played his part right.
FRENKIE DE JONG (MIDFIELD) 8.5/10
De Jong shares a similar rating figure as Clement Lenglet. Both of these players are on the 2nd in our list of player ratings. Alright guys, brace yourselves for endless praises for this young lad! De Jong made a comeback recently after an injury that ruled him out of the ending La Liga matches. However, he has made an incredible comeback. He shows brilliant signs of fitness and is always one of the most visible players on the pitch. Frenkie has some incredible ball maneuvering skills and he makes sure that he always remains available.
De Jong is always available for a pass and he makes everything look so effortless. De Jong is the midfielder who has the capability to fill in the boots of Busquests. His performance made every Cule confidence of a brighter Barca future ahead. De Jong was simply better than anyone else in the midfield. His best moment in the game was that aerial pass to Messi which Messi controlled on his chest and finished. However, that was given as a handball and therefore, De Jong could not get his assist. He was one of our best players on the pitch.
ANTOINE GRIEZMANN (WINGER) 5.5/10
Griezmann ends with the lowest rating out of all the players mentioned over here. The French forward was seen putting in the effort and he showed his usual work ethic. However, his involvement in the game was closer to none. He did not threaten the opposition defenders with late runs or one v ones. Furthermore, he also did not cause any significant problems for the goalkeeper, David Ospina. Griezmann was subbed off for Monchu who made his Barcelona debut. Griezmann has to work hard in order to stay at the club and in the team as well.
LUIS SUAREZ (STRIKER) 7/10
Luis Suarez ended with a far better rating than Antoine Griezmann. However, there was not something very special about his performance either. The fact that Suarez converted from the penalty spot might be the reason that he was able to end up with a rating above 6. However, we cannot completely declare that his performance and Antoine’s performance was similar. Suarez kept moving here and there and tried his best to create as much trouble for the defense as possible. Furthermore, he tried to keep getting involved within plays. Lionel asked him to take the penalty and he scored brilliantly.
LIONEL MESSI (WINGER) 9/10
Lionel ends with the highest rating out of every Barcelona player. This is not something very surprising, is it? Messi is known for being the best and he showed it through his performance on the pitch in this game. Napoli had one job to do. That was to stop Lionel from scoring. However, they failed. Messi looked confident and positive since the first minute and he was able to take his team through to the Quarter Finals. His goal was extremely incredible. He was pushed and was covered by 3-4 players.
However, he showed a brilliant display of energy and got up and somehow curled the ball into the far post. Only someone as good as Lionel Messi could have scored that goal. Lionel was definitely visible on all parts of the pitch. He showed great levels of fitness and was always there to either receive or play a pass to his teammates. Lionel scored another goal which was set up for him by Frenkie De Jong. However, the controversial VAR decision declared it as a handball, and therefore, that goal was denied. Lionel won the penalty which he gave to Luis Suarez.

I have not discussed the substitutions in this game because their impact in this game was very minimal. Furthermore, Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig did not get any playing time in this encounter. What are your thoughts on that? Do you think Setien should be wiser with his substitution choices? Do you think that improper subs choices can cost us the game against Bayern in the semi-finals of CL competition?
