Welcome to TalkBarca. We are going to discuss the Match Review of Barcelona vs Dortmund. A great Champions League night, indeed. Barcelona won the game 3-1. This is a great result for us. Barcelona is now at the top of their Champions League group, and surely through to the Round of 16.
On the other side, Inter and Dortmund are both at 7 points each, and have to compete against each other for the qualification.
Coming back to the game, I am really happy with the way we performed. It has been really long since I saw Barcelona performing like that. I wouldn’t say that we were flawless, but, we were still better than our recent poor form.
We dominated the strong Dortmund team which gave their all to defeat us. Furthermore, we saw yet another Lionel Messi masterclass in the game. Messi provided 2 assists, scored a goal. His free kick from out of the box hit the crossbar. That’s classic Lionel Messi.
However, Dortmund wasn’t bad either. Its true that they conceded 3 goals, and lost the game, but, all goals came from defensive errors. Hummels gave away the ball cheaply which lead to the second goal. The defender was unable to spot Suarez’s run which lead to the first goal. The keeper was also clueless about that finish as the ball went through his legs, and in the back of the net.
Suarez’s first goal was rightfully given offside. However, that was a great run from Suarez, and a brilliant pass from Messi. Messi delivered one of the best performances of the season. I am really happy the way Barca played yesterday, and I want that we continue with our winning ways. Dortmund wasn’t bad as well, just careless.
BARCELONA VS DORTMUND MATCH REVIEW
The manager, Ernesto Valverde started with a really good lineup. This is something you do not see from Valverde quiet often. However, he used Rakitic to start in the midfield ahead of Arthur. This is something I do not prefer. Rather, I think that the trio of Arthur, De Jong and Busquests is the best midfield combination for us.
Still Rakitic needed game time, and watching him start did not trouble me at all. I am actually happy to see him in the Barca colours. I am also a huge Rakitic fan. Therefore, I want him to get more and more game time in Champions League as well as La Liga.
Ter Stegen started in goal. Ter had a great game. He was involved in the game. I saw him cheering up his defenders verbally, giving them confidence, and shouting at them to run after the ball. Furthermore, he saved 2 really good attempts from Borrusia Dortmund. Ter is like another player in our defense, always present when we need him. His reflexes are really fast, and he showed his world class goalkeeping standards to us against Dortmund.
Its true that Ter Stegen or Barcelona did concede one goal. However, that was not Ter Stegen’s fault. It was a great display of awareness and fast feet from Sancho. Hence, the ball ended at the back of the net. For me, Ter Stegen is one of the best performers from yesterday’s game.
Clement Lenglet and Umtiti started as Center Backs. They were not much involved during the game. However, Lenglet made a couple important tackles. Gerrard Pique was obviously not included in the squad as he was suspended. We saw Pique watching the match from the stands. This is somewhat positive to see, as it proves that Pique still cares for Barcelona, and football is still his passion.
Junior Firpo started on the Left Back side. Firpo had a great game. According to my observation, Firpo stood out as the best defender out of the 4 who played the game. He was involved in attacks. He dropped down to help his team to defend. Furthermore, Firpo played non stop, putting in a lot of efforts. His game play showed how much desperate he is for A team football. He also deserves to be a part of this team especially after such a great performance.
Sergio Roberto started as the Right Back. He also had a good game. Sergio actively participated in the midfield like he normally does. He did a good job in defense as well. Overall, a great outing for him.
De Jong, Sergio Busquests, and Rakitic started in the midfield. Our midfielders played really good. We dominated the Dortmund team. We made a lot of small passes, lots of interceptions, and created chances too. Dortmund was completely flat footed during several stages in the game. This is a sign of good things to come back to Barcelona. Our midfield played exactly the way it needed to.
As I said above that Arthur is a better option to start ahead of Rakitic, still I am satisfied with how Rakitic bossed the midfield. He was really dominant in the first half. However, his performance declined in the second half. This might be because he is out of form, and has not played much football lately. Still, he had a great game. He was subbed off at the 78th minute for Arturo Vidal. Rakitic left the field with a huge applause from the crowd, and no doubt, he deserved that.
Frenkie also had a wonderful game. He was very active, and made many quick passes or vital interceptions. Frenkie De Jong was a part of many counter attacks Barcelona made against Dortmund. He is one of our pivotal players in the midfield.
Sergio, as always played a really intelligent game. Sergio Busquests is our true unsung hero. He works a lot for the team, but, there are not many eyes who can spot the amount of effort he puts in every game. Without Sergio, our midfield is hollow. He was once again present to help his attackers, and also dropped down multiple times to help his team defend.
Messi, Suarez, and Griezmann all ended on the scoresheet. However, it was not Griezmann who started the game. Dembele started ahead of him at the Left wing position. However, he didn’t have a great game. He also became injured, and left the pitch in tears. I am currently unaware of the kind of injury Dembele has picked up. There has not been any final report, but, I hope that he is fine, and can return to first team sooner than we think.
Our front three really delivered an amazing performance. Suarez put in a lot of efforts. He also scored a good goal courtesy of a great ball from Lionel Messi. Later, he assisted Lionel Messi for his goal, and Messi assisted Griezmann later in the game. This is the way our front three need to be, quick and lethal.
Best Individual Performances:
Messi ended up as the man of the match, and truly he deserved this. This is the kind of Lionel Messi the fans want to see. Messi was everywhere on the pitch. He dropped down in defense. He linked plays with midfield. Messi assisted, and he scored aswell. What else can you ask from him?
Messi’s freekick hit the crossbar, otherwise that goal would have been in the highlights all over. I am glad to see him coming back in form. I’ll also mention that the Chemistry between our front 3 players is improving. This is positive to see. We need them to shine in tough fixtures ahead.
