Welcome to TalkBarca. We are going to cover the Match Preview of Barcelona vs Dortmund today. UEFA Champions League is back, and we have a great fixture ahead of us. This game is for sure going to be a thriller. However, I, as a Barcelona fan am really not comfortable facing Dortmund because of our recent form.
Barcelona is heavily out of form with the manager, Ernesto Valverde disappointing us with crazy tactics every week. Last week we played against Leganes. Leganes is at the bottom of the table, and has already conceded about 20 22 goals this season. Barcelona had Suarez, Dembele, Messi, and Griezmann upfront. Still we were unable to score from open plays. How much poor can Barcelona be? Valverde has seriously decided that he is going to end the 40 decades of Barca’s legacy in just a couple of seasons.
Coming back to our match preview, I expect this fixture to be really tough. Barcelona is heavily out of form, where as Borrusia Dortmund can be tactically lethal even away from home. Barcelona vs Dortmund fixture is really exciting for neutral fans, but, for Barca fans this is a major worry. On the other side, we have a few suspensions as well. These suspensions include Gerrard Pique who is sidelined for the match. Nelson Semedo and Sergio Roberto are also out due to injuries. Lenglet’s participation is also in doubt as there is no clear update on his injury. However, I think that might just make it to the startling lineup.
Previously, Barcelona and Dortmund have never met in a Champions League fixture. Their last meeting apart from the Dortmund home leg this season was in 1997 Super Cup final. Barcelona won 2-2 at their home and drew 1-1 at Borrusia’s home. Hence, claimed themselves as winners of the battle.
However, this is a completely different time, and Barcelona is not same anymore. We have to take this encounter seriously. Otherwise, we might have to pay.
BARCELONA VS DORTMUND MATCH PREVIEW
The club issued a name of 18 players available for the clash against Dortmund. These players are;
Ter Stegen, I. Rakitic, Sergio, Todibo, Arthur, Suárez, Messi, O. Dembélé, Neto, Lenglet, M. Wague, Griezmann, S. Roberto, F . From Jong, Vidal, Umtiti, Junior and Ansu Fati.
We already mentioned that 3 of our players are confirmed to be unavailable. The fourth one, Clement Lenglet is a doubt, and is therefore, part of our expected starting lineup. Carles Alena and Perez are also left out by Valverde.
EXPECTED LINEUP AND TACTICAL ANALYSIS
Barcelona can end up as the group winners if they win against Dortmund. However, a loss can make things really complicated for Barcelona. If they lose, they have to definitely avoid a loss against Inter which is really not as easy as said. Inter is surely going to push hard if this happens. Therefore, Barcelona must win this otherwise, things can spice up in the Group of death.
Ter Stegen is the sure starter in this important clash against Dortmund. Ter Stegen has proved that his worth is of a big game player, and he needs to prove this again in this match. He saved a penalty in away fixture against Dortmund. We need similar classic performance from him again.
Pique is out. Therefore, I expect Umtiti and Lenglet to start as the Center Backs. Both of these players have to go all out, and must play sensibly. Our defence is awful, and extreme care must be given to it if we have any desire of winning against Dortmund.
Junior Firpo is the most likely starter on the Left Back. I am happy to see Firpo improving his game on weekly basis. These games count a lot for him. This is because as soon as Alba is back, Firpo is going to be subbed again. Therefore, he must utilize these games to prove that he is a Barca quality player, and not just a hype.
Roberto is also the part of the squad, and therefore the most likely starter on the Right Back. Roberto just needs to play his regular game, and must not stick to the defense. He must join his midfield, and help it to maintain possession. Roberto has the experience that our defense needs. He just needs to show his expertise on the field.
I don’t support the idea of implementing any new or flashy tactics for this game. We saw a really different and uncommon formation in the previous game against Leganes. Valverde must avoid it for this game. 4 defenders and 3 defenders are perfect. No matter how many versatile match preview we make, Valverde finds a way to disappoint us with something new.
On the midfield, I expect Sergio Busquests to operate from the center midfield. Busquests is the heart of our midfield, and he has always been consistent for years. He needs to be active in this game, and if he gets going with his game, Dortmund’s destruction is guaranteed.
Arthur is back in the squad, and therefore a possibility to be part of this game. He was dropped by Valverde from the previous fixture. However, I expect him to start to start this game. On the other side, my most likely starter is Frenkie De Jong. This is the same midfield I am so fond of using in my expected lineups. The sole reason is that I believe so much in this trio. I think that this midfield trio can easily be the most authoritative midfield trio in Europe.
Vidal’s participation in the game is also very likely. His physical abilities can help us during the late moments of the game. However, it is difficult to see him starting the game as he is more of a super substitute than a classic starter.
Dembele is the best choice for me to start on Left wing. Messi is sure starter on the Right wing. No matter how much I oppose this, Suarez is surely the most likely starter as striker. Dembele must play with confidence if he starts the game. I think earning a starting role in the squad boosts your confidence as a player, and Dembele must show this. We need to see the old flashy Ousmane Dembele piercing through defenders.
Messi has a huge responsibility too. He is going to be the centre of attention as always. He must actively participate into plays, and must be kind to other players too except Suarez.
Speaking about Suarez, he just to wait for Messi to find him. Suarez is sluggish, and no more the threat that he used to be. He is just living off the tap ins Messi provides him. Messi also focuses on Suarez more than any other player. I have no idea what is up between these two, but, their bromance is destroying our team.
Bench is good for us. We have Antoine Griezmann. Ansu Fati is also there Vidal’s presence is also likely. If Griezmann starts then Dembele is going to be on the bench.
Ansu Fati has not been playing a lot recently so Valverde might use him to boost his confidence. Same is the case with Croatian National, Ivan Rakitic. We have covered an entire separate article on Rakitic. He really needs game time if he has to return to his 100% confidence. If Valverde leaves him to rust on the bench, no club is going to buy him, and this is a loss to the board.
Barcelona just needs to stick their natural game. The players need to be confident on the pitch, and must be active in their movements. If we hold our nerves, and Valverde doesn’t use his non existent brain much, we can easily win this game.
Our final prediction from this Barcelona vs Dortmund match preview is a 3-1 scoreline with Barcelona winning the game, and winning the group aswell.
My verdict is similar to everything I have written above. We need to play a decent solid, and a solid game. We cannot experiment much in this game. Barcelona cannot risk our Round of 16 qualification to be decided against Inter Milan. Barcelona have to face Dortmund, and crush them. We have to make a comeback, and boost everyone’s confidence in the locker room.
Barcelona needs to be back on winning ways. We need to send a statement to everyone that FC Barcelona is back, and ready to dominate Europe once again. There is no hope lost. Time is still there. We just need to cash it properly.
