Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is Barcelona vs Bayern Munich Match Preview . We are back to the Champions League and Barcelona has to face Bayern Munich today in Lisbon. The tie for the first semi-finals of this year’s Champions League is set. Barcelona is going to take on the German giants, Bayern Munich. We are going to see the first finalists of this year’s Champions League today. Are you as excited as I am? I am really looking forward to this game because I know that it promises to be a thriller. This is Barcelona vs Bayern Munich!
Both of these teams are European giants. Your season’s form or performances in the league do not seem to count a lot in the Champions League. The reason is that CL is a completely different tournament and players approach these games differently. The mindset is different and the playing tactics differ as well. Champions League is known to have comebacks, last-minute goals, and whatnot. Therefore, you cannot rule out any team before the match has fully ended. We saw this in this year’s Quarter Finals as well. Atlanta dominated the PSG team till the very last.
However, PSG changed the game completely within a span of the last 3 minutes. Furthermore, we also saw that Atletico equalized against Leipzig and it was looking as if Simeone’s men are going to make it to the semi-final stage. However, Leipzig scored the leading goal towards the very end of the game. That goal also took them to the semifinals of this year’s CL competition. Therefore, nothing can be predicted about this game. A funny fact is that whenever Bayern and FC Barcelona meet in the CL, the winners of that match goes on to win the Champions League trophy.
Kickoff is going to be at 8pm local time. This game is being held in Lisbon, Portugal. Both teams are going to play at Estadio De Luz which is the home of Benfica. The game is going to begin at 12am Pakistani timings and 12:30am India timings. The fans are excited, the players are ready and the managers have done their homework. It all comes down to who has the stronger will and who is going to show that one bit of more courage which is going to take his team through. There is a lot to talk about today.
FC BARCELONA VS BAYERN MUNICH MATCH PREVIEW
People at the FC Bayern Munich club have been running their mouths too much now. Lothar Matthaus said that “Messi faces his successor as the best player in the world: Roberto Lewandowski. He is the BEST PLAYER, not just the BEST FORWARD.” He further added, “The Barca of today is no longer the same as before. They have Messi, of course, and a player like him is always capable of genius. But he alone will not be enough against this Bayern. BARCELONA DO NOT SCARE ME.” That is some confidence coming from Bayern, right.
Ex Bayern, Giovane Elber also spoke about the upcoming game. He said, “I love what Messi does and how he plays. He has been a top player for years. A genius, but Lewandowski’s given a recital this year. Right now, LEWANDOWSKI IS BETTER THAN MESSI. He can do anything and converts all of the balls that reach him into goals. And he’ll keep on doing it. He’s having a spectacular season.” This is not all. We have been hearing a lot of Messi vs Lewandowski debates since Barca won against Napoli. A lot of German pundits are talking about it.
All of them are claiming for Lewandowski to be the best and they think Messi alone cannot do any harm to this Bayern Munich side. However, this is not it. Rummenigge, the Bayern Chairman also spoke on Manuel Neuer and Ter Stegen. He said, “The National Team is lucky to have two top goalkeepers. Manuel Neuer is world-class and Ter Stegen is only ON HIS WAY to World-Class. I would seriously disagree with that. As a matter of fact, this is such a funny statement. Thanks to Rummenigge for cracking me up. However, that is not my concern right now.
BARCELONA’S REACTION ON ALL THE BAYERN COMMENTS
I mentioned previously that my major concern is not to react back or laugh or get angry at all those comments coming from Germany. My major concern is how is my team going to respond to all of this. We know all this news. We have been reading and listening to all these conferences. Therefore, it is also confirmed that the Barcelona players are also aware of all of this. They are following everything as well. They know that the Germans are super confident to take them on Friday night. How are they going to respond?
This game is not a Messi vs Lewa battle. This is not Ter Stegen vs Neuer battle. It is even not a battle of who’s got the better midfielders or the managers. This game is a total test of will and determination. Barcelona has a track record of shutting everyone up and they have to extend that record today at any cost. It is not about shutting the German team or the media or Bayern Munich. It is about shutting literally everyone up because everyone apart from FC Barcelona fans think that they are going to lose.
Our team needs to play sensibly today. We have to go out there as a unit. We cannot depend only on Messi to take the ball, dribble 6 players, humiliate Boateng again then chip Neuer. This is a big NO! We have to play as a team. We have to attack as a team and we have to defend as a team. Tonight, we have to show that Barcelona is still a big threat in Europe and can achieve anything as a team. We have got what it takes. We just need the right execution and we’ll go through.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE BARCELONA TEAM?
Now I have written how I want my team to play. Now I am going to discuss what to expect from the team and the predicted gameplay. Barcelona is a team that has struggled defensively this season. They have also found it difficult to play against teams imposing low blocks. However, I do not expect Bayern to play that way. Bayern is a side who has extremely fit players ready to press the Barca players all the time for 90 minutes. This is where Barcelona can be feeble. Barcelona struggles under high-press.
We have had our problems in attack as well. However, Bayern is the team that is going to play more attacking football then defensive football. Bayern is totally different from our previous opponents, Napoli who were comfortable in dropping back and stopping Barcelona attacking. Bayern is going to play fast and is going to try its best to get the ball to Lewa or any other frontmen as often as possible. Now, Quique Setien is also going to make his full-backs play at a high line. Jordi Alba and Semedo are going to play more as wing-backs.
Sergio Busquests is also going to operate slightly higher from the CDM position in order to move the ball forward as much as the team can. Therefore, this is can lead Barcelona to leave spaces out wide or within the center. Bayern is a team really lethal and quick on counter-attacks. Their midfielders are pretty sharp and can pick out the narrowest of spaces. Sadly, their forwards are also pretty faster than our center backs. Therefore, Barcelona needs to operate with a strict defensive approach as well as initiating attacks regularly.
The midfield is going to be pivotal for Barcelona because they have to drop up and down constantly. Our midfielders need to keep their eyes open all the time in order to play out the best passes to their forwards. Our players need to try to put their front men in as much one vs ones as possible so that Barcelona can increase their chances of scoring goals. It is a game in which Barcelona needs to keep alert on all areas. If they lose focus even for a little bit, Bayern is going to sting us and that sting means kicking us out of Champions League.
Our players look confident. Setien also has his full squad to play now considering that Sergio Busquests and Vidal are back from suspension. Ousmane Dembele also seems to be fully fit and can get some minutes or even one whole half in this game. Antoine Griezmann looks pretty confident as well. He spoke to the media and he told them that he is there to stay in Lisbon for long. He even joked about bringing his play station alongside him because he was sure about Barcelona making it to the finals of the competition.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM BAYERN MUNICH?
Bayern did not start the season with a great form. They struggled in the beginning games of the Bundesliga and their senior players such as Muller were struggling as well. However, they picked up the pace in no time and it was pretty soon that Bayern imposed their dominance in the German League. Lewandowski began to get in fine form and started scoring goals from here, there, and everywhere. He was soon declared to be in the best form of his life and eventually became the favorite to win the Ballon D’Or. Bayern started dominating every other team they faced.
It did not take Bayern a lot of time to register another league title for them. However, Germany was not the only place being dominated by the Bavarians. They registered themselves as an immovable object in Europe as well and they have previously thrashed Chelsea. Bayern is in no doubt, the best form out of any other team in Europe. However, they have a pretty difficult challenge to face as FC Barcelona is up next against them. Bayern knows that facing Barcelona and winning against them is easier said than done. However, they look pretty confident and positive for a victory.
Arturo Vidal also spoke on Bayern. He said, “Bayern are always favorites, but Barça is the best in the world, so it will be very even. Bayern is confident but they should know that they won’t be playing against a Bundesliga team”. If you are not a regular follower of the German team, then you might be probably thinking that Lewandowski is the only threat to Barcelona. However, that is not the case. Bayern also depends upon their full-backs especially Alphonso Davies who has a lightning pace and has not been dribbled past a lot this season.
Furthermore, they also depend upon their midfield especially Thiago Alcantara who is a specialist in picking out his front men. Bayern’s Center Backs are not the most physical players on the pitch. However, they know how to close down spaces and Bayern presses as a team. Therefore, their Center Backs do not have to worry to body the other players. Barcelona is definitely in for a great challenge. Barcelona depends a lot on Lionel Messi. However, they have to operate as a team as well. Bayern is not undefeatable. They have their weaknesses as well.
Barcelona just needs to hit them where it is going to hurt the most.
I think Barcelona is going to win the game. The reason behind this is that I am a Barca fan and I always wish the best for my team. I am not going to predict any scores like I normally do over here on this blog. This game is going to be full of surprises and unpredictability. The only thing to know is which team gets surprised the most. Is Bayern going to win and prove the critics correct? Or is it going to be FC Barcelona who shuts up everyone once again and qualify to final?
Let’s wait and see.
VISCA EL BARCA!
