Welcome back to TalkBarca. Our topic for today is the Tactical Match Review of Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona. Barcelona faced Atletico in the Super Copa De Espana Semi Final and lost the game. The fans were expecting to witness an El Classico in the Super Copa final on Sunday. However, this is not going to happen. We were clear the favorites against Atletico, but, on the day, we failed. We were the better team throughout the match. Our attackers played really well against a composed defense of Atletico. Our midfielders did their job too. We dominated the whole game except for the last minutes. Our defense let us down. We made basic and childish mistakes in our defense which cost us a trophy.
As a fan, I am totally devastated by the way our defenders, especially Pique, performed in this fixture. I would literally hit Valverde or any of our defensive players if they come in front of me right now. This was not the game to lose. We were in there to win it and we should have. Bad performances are getting really casual for us now and we must take this into account. Obviously, luck played its part as well. Messi had his 2nd goal denied through VAR, which was clearly a wrong decision. The VAR claimed that it was a handball when the ball clearly touched his shoulder.
Furthermore, Neto completely failed in this game. We conceded 3 goals conceded which were obviously because of defensive errors, but still, Neto was not impressive. He also gave away a penalty. There is a lot to discuss in this game that is coming up. However, our Super Copa De Espana outing Saudi Arabia was a complete misery. Lastly, this defeat also brings an end to our winning streak and all the momentum we had created has gone down the trashcan. We must look at the future now, and we must focus on La Liga, and Champions League now. So, without any further delay, let’s start our Tactical Match Review of Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona.
BARCELONA VS ATLETICO MADRID MATCH REVIEW
Coming on to the Match Review, Barcelona dominated the first half and was the far better side. We created a couple of good goalscoring chances but Oblak rose to the occasion and kept his team in the game. The first half score was 0-0 despite Barcelona being on top of their game.
Diago Simione introduced Koke at the start of the second half who scored in the first 20 seconds of the second half and took lead for Atletico Madrid in Super Copa De Espana. Messi stepped up and scored the equalizer in the 51st minute and got us back in the game. A few minutes later, Messi scored another brilliant goal but it was denied by the VAR which is absolutely horrendous. The ball touched the shoulder of Messi but VAR declared it as handball. In short, VAR robbed us of a clear goal.
In the 62nd minute, Jordi Alba put up a brilliant cross in piercing through the defense of Atletico and met the header of Luis Suarez. It was a brilliant and powerful header but Oblack saved it. Griezmann than followed the rebound and put it in the net with a calm header. Barcelona took the lead with Griezmann scoring against his former club.
Just a few minutes later, Barcelona scored another goal from a set-piece but it was denied by the VAR. Messi found Arturo Vidal with a freekick who found Gerard Pique with an acrobatic pass and Pique put it in the net. The VAR ruled out this goal stating that Vidal was offside. However, if we take a closer look at the freekick, it’s clear that Vidal was onside. Here, VAR robbed us of another magnificent goal. After 2 goals wrongly denied by VAR Barcelona was still in the lead with a 1-2 scoreline.
Atletico players were hungry for a win and started showing their desire in the final10 minutes of the game. They scored 2 goals in that time to steal a victory over us in Super Copa De Espana. First, it was Morata who provided a through ball to Vitolo who had all the space to get in a one-on-one situation with Neto. Neto tried to stop him but ended up conceding a penalty and a yellow card. Morata took the penalty and socred by sending Neto on the wrong side.
Then, it was Morata again who made an almost identical though pass for Correa for the third goal. Just like the previous situation, Correa had all the time and space in the world to finish the chance. Neto was trying to rush at him in order to stop chance. Correa attempted a shot and Neto tried to stop it. Neto did get a touch on the ball but could not stop it from following the trajectory of the goal. Roberto tried to clear it but it was too late as the ball was already in the net. Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona ended with a 3-2 scoreline in favor of Atletico. This marks another knockout game bottled by Valverde as Barcelona is out of Super Copa De Espana. We that was all for the game walkthrough for our Match Review. Let’s now take a look at our starting lineups.
Neto started in goal for Super Copa De Espana. This is most probably his last game starting ahead of Ter Stegen because Ter is expected to return in the next game. Anyway, this was probably not one of the best games for Neto. He conceded 3 goals and also gave away a penalty. What else can go wrong for a goalkeeper? Neto never looked going in the entire game. However, he did make some good saves. To be honest, Neto wasn’t at fault for any goal. If we want to blame someone it’s our defense.
We as Barcelona fans need to realize that Neto is not Ter Stegen. Overall, it was not a good day for us, and Neto is not an exception. We fought till the last minute, in order to make a place in the final for an El Classico. However, it did not happen. The Spanish Super Cup final is going to be a Madrid Derby now. It is time we really hold our heads up and care about the future.
The only area where we were poor in the game was our defense. Our defense once again faced to put the impact we badly needed it to put. Pique and Umtiti started in defense, and none of them was able to put any sort of positive impact on the game. Umtiti committed many mistakes and clearly showed that Lenglet deserved the starting role more than him. Pique was again clumsy, lazy, and playing unwillingly. This game never reflected that it was a semifinal. As a fan, I am really disappointed with our defense.
Our defenders never looked as if they were playing a semifinal. Their body language reflected as if they were playing a friendly match. Our players lacked energy, composure, coordination, and the majority of these flaws were in our defense. All in all, our defense failed miserably as all 3 goals were basic mistakes from our defenders. We really need to pick ourselves up otherwise it is going to be really late. Real Madrid are in the best form ever, and if we continue like this, Real is going to leave us in its shadows sooner than we realize.
Apart from all this, I think Jordi Alba played better than others. Jordi Alba and Roberto did show some intention that they had the desire to go through. This is a positive thing for us and we need to support these players to give them more confidence for future games. Apart from all this, we need to work as a unit now and out defensive players, especially the Center Backs, need to get back on track. This performance has forced me to claim that Umtiti is somehow overrated and Pique’s glory days are long gone. I hope they prove me wrong in the future.
De Jong, Busquests, and Vidal started in the midfield. I think this was a great trio chosen by Ernesto Valverde and this midfield did click aswell. De Jong was flawless once again and I am really liking the fact that he is performing with a lot of consistency. De Jong seems to never get in pressure. He is such a calm, and composed player under high press or any other pressure situation.
The same is the case with Sergio Busquests. He never seems to get under pressure. Sergio is our hero, and without him, I cannot expect our midfield to function. He made several clinical passes helping his team to initiate many counter-attacks. Sergio and De Jong combine really well in the midfield bringing in the essential composure in the midfield. Their composure was strengthened by the energy and attacking ability of Arturo Vidal. Vidal worked tirelessly in the midfield. He was involved in a lot of attacks initiated by his fellow midfielders and he even got himself into scoring positions many times in the game.
Vidal was like a constant threat to the Atletico defense and it was really hard for them to stop him. Overall, I think Vidal has improved a lot since joining our club. He has kept his style of play while adapting to the philosophy at FC Barcelona. I think both Vidal and Greizmann deserve a lot of appreciation for coming from tactically very different clubs and actually adapting to the way we play.
Our attackers stayed busy throughout the game. However, they could not impact the game they wanted to. Suarez worked a lot in the entire game and tried his best to score for his team. However, today was not his day. He connected a good header that was saved by Oblak which Griezmann followed and scored. At one moment, I am a little upset that Suarez didn’t score. However, on the other hand I am really happy that Grizzy ended on the scoresheet. Scoring against Atletico Madrid is a major confidence boost for our winger and we really needed this for him.
As mentioned above, Messi’s 2nd goal was denied through VAR. The VAR claimed that it was a handball. However, any sane person can tell that it was for more than being a handball. The ball had clearly touched Messi’s shoulder and not his hands. Other than the fact that the goal was not given, it was a great move by the Argentinian King. He faked as if he was going to hit a volley and ended up finishing the ball at the back of the net.
This VAR decision really lifted Atletico’s confidence, and to me, that was the major turning point of the game. After this, Atletico started making Messi to reduce his influence on the game. Yes, we were really unlucky as well in this game. However, blaming luck is going to be a really childish thing to do. I think that we must accept that we have a lot of faults within our gameplay, and we are no longer the same Barcelona anymore. Messi is somewhat getting older as well, and depending solely on him is going to further drag his performances. Now, we need to continue in La Liga positively.
